  2. England v Pakistan: Joe Root 'comfortable' batting to number threepublished at 17:30 British Summer Time 12 July 2016

    England's Joe Root is "comfortable" with moving up one place in the batting order to number three for the first Test against Pakistan.

    James Vince, who has played only three Tests, and the recalled Gary Ballance will bat at four and five when the series starts at Lord's on Thursday.

    Pakistan bowler Wahab Riaz described England's middle order as 'fragile'.

    Root, 25, who has batted at three in five of his 42 Tests, said it is "a great opportunity to bat a bit longer".

  5. Appeal for witnesses to fatal collision on M1published at 16:25 British Summer Time 12 July 2016

    A Barnsley man has died following a collision on the M1 in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday, 12 July) and officers are urging drivers who were on the motorway and witnessed the collision to please come forward. 

    Wayne Milnthorpe, 46, was pronounced dead, external at the scene of the collision, between junctions 35 and 35A of the northbound carriageway, at around 1.40am this morning.

    It is believed Mr Milnthorpe lost control of the black Ford Fiesta he was driving and collided with the nearside barrier. 

    The car then came to a stop in the first lane of the motorway, where there was a further collision with a white Iveco LGV. The driver of the LGV did not suffer any injuries.

    John Healey MP has been demanding answers from the Business Secretary, over plans by TATA Steel to sell off its sites at Rotherham and Sheffield. 

    The Wentworh and Dearne MP says Sajid Javid's gone back on a promise to give hundreds of millions of pounds to support all parts of the company's UK operation.

    The Off the Shelf Festival in Sheffield has commissioned a new poem as part of Year of Making Sheffield 2016.

    The new piece has been composed by the city's internationally known, and award winning musican Richard Hawley.

    Harry Brearley, the Sheffielder credited with inventing stainless steel, has been given a place on the Tree of Life at Rotherham Hospice.

    The leaf was bought in his memory by Ann Humberstone, the wife of Harry's great-nephew Peter, a patient at Rotherham Hospice who died in November 2015 aged 85.

    The three metre high stainless steel Tree of Life sculpture was officially launched three years ago and has already raised more than £35,000 thanks to bereaved relatives.

    They are able to purchase engraved leaves and sections of bark in memory of their relative.

    British Transport Police have today released an image of a man they want to speak to about an assault at Doncaster station.

    Police say the incident happened in the travel centre on Friday 3 June at 8pm.

    The victim was standing in a queue to buy a ticket when he asked a man who was being verbally abusive and swearing at other customers to stop.The man reacted by kicking the victim in the stomach.

    Anyone with information is asked to contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40, or text 61016, quoting reference 199 of 12/07/2016. Information can also be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

    The Accident and Emergency department at Rotherham Hospital says it is currently experiencing unprecedented summer demand for its services.

    To ensure staff can focus on caring for the seriously ill and injured, hospital bosses are asking members of the public to consider all options for their care needs including the Walk-in Centre, GP surgeries or pharmacies. 

    Hospital bosses say Accident and Emergency departments are for serious and life threatening illness and injuries such as choking, severe chest pain, stroke and major blood loss.

    The Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, has appealed for calm in the party after a window was smashed at Angela Eagle's constituency office.

    The MP and former shadow business secretary formally launched her challenge for the Labour leadership yesterday.

    Last week her office staff disconnected phones because of the abuse and threats being directed at her. 

    This afternoon Angela Smith the MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge has tweeted that the attacks on the office of Angela Eagle are truly appalling and there is no place for such behaviour in our democracy.

  13. Man left with broken pelvis after bus attack in Sheffieldpublished at 13:42 British Summer Time 12 July 2016

    Police in Sheffield are appealing for information following an incident on a bus that left two men with nasty injuries.

    At around 9pm on Thursday 16 June, the X30 (Handsworth) TM Travel bus was heading out of Sheffield onto the Parkway when an altercation broke out.

    A man and a woman, who are believed to have got on the bus at Arundel Gate, assaulted a 63-year-old man and 55-year-old man before jumping off the bus and heading across the Parkway in the direction of Park Hill flats.

    The 63-year-old man suffered a broken pelvis and stab wound , externalto his arm and the 55-year-old man suffered a cut to his neck and dog bite to his arm. The offenders are described as in their early 20s and had a brown Staffordshire bull terrier with them.

    UKIP's Jonathan Arnott has announced his candidacy to be the party's leader following the resignation of Nigel Farage.

    Mr Arnott, 35, has been MEP for the North East since 2014. Prior to being elected he was the party's general secretary for six years.

    According to his CV he enrolled at the University of Sheffield aged just 15, having gained his 'A' levels three years early, leaving after having attained a Masters in Mathematics.

    He went on to become head of mathematics at a school in Sheffield before entering politics.

    Serbia have turned to a Yorkshire man with Eastern European roots in their bid to secure a place in the 2017 World Cup. 

    Doncaster-born Darren Higgins has been appointed as the Serbians' head coach and will take time out from his role of talent development manager at Castleford Tigers to prepare them for October's final European qualifying matches against Wales and Italy.

    Higgins a former head of youth at Sheffield Eagles and London Broncos, spent nine days in Belgrade last month, overseeing matches against the touring Yorkshire Lionhearts.

    Higgins, who has closely monitored attempts over the last decade to establish rugby league in the country, is passionate about his new hands-on role, especially as it provides a link to his Serbia-born grandfather Simo Tijanic. "That's part of the reason I'm doing it," he said. "I'm really proud to be given the opportunity".

    More than £8 million pounds of lottery money is being shared out between more than 200 organisations in Yorkshire. 

    Projects in Rotherham, Doncaster, Sheffield and Barnsley will benefit from the cash. "Stainforth 4 All" gets £140 thousand pounds to offer I.T. training for unemployed people. 

    Doncaster West Development Trust has been given grants of more than £185 thousand, for a new community hub in Denaby.

    And POPS Summer camp in Rawmarsh is almost £360 thousand pounds better off they support the physical and mental development of young people.

    The Independent Police Complaints Commission says it won't be publishing the full version of its report into allegations of police misconduct at the Orgreave coking plant, external

    The IPCC published a redacted report in June last year. A spokesman says.. It won't publish this because there may be some material within that report which is relevant to the current Hillsborough investigation. 

    It goes on to say - "Decisions are yet to be made on whether any criminal proceedings are to be brought as a result of those investigations and the IPCC doesn't want to prejudice that process."

    Over the past two days I've been trying to take selfies with all 58 of the elephants installed in the city.

    It's hoped the Herd of Sheffield will help raised thousands of pounds for the Sheffield Children's Hospital Charity.

    I set off on Monday morning at 0700 and at 1030 this morning I finally made it to the last elephant next to Park Hill flats.
