  4. Alton Towers crash: 'Appropriate action' taken over staff errorspublished at 17:24

    Alton Towers says it has followed "standard HR procedures and taken the appropriate action" when dealing with the staff whose errors caused a rollercoaster crash.

    The theme park announced today, after carrying out its own investigation, that human error caused the Smiler ride to hit an empty carriage in front of it on 2 June.

    Five people were seriously hurt in the crash and two women, Victoria Balch and Leah Washington, had legs amputated.

  10. Alton Towers crash report: Owners say safety improved on other rollercoasterspublished at 16:11

    Alton Towers says it's improved safety measures on all its multi-carriage rollercoasters following a crash in June that seriously injured five people.

    Merlin Entertainment, which owns Alton Towers, says it includes rides at its other theme parks, including Chessington World of Adventure and Thorpe Park.

    The Staffordshire theme park today said its own investigation found human error caused the crash on the Smiler ride.

    - On 2 June, two carriages on the Smiler rollercoaster collide injuring 16 people, five seriously

    - A rescue effort takes several hours and the theme park is closed for five days

    - On 5 June, four rollercoasters at other theme parks owned by Merlin Entertainments are closed down as a precaution

    - Merlin Entertainments investigates the crash saying it will compensate all 16 people who were injured

    - Vicky Balch, 20, from Lancashire and Leah Washington, 17, from Barnsley both have a leg amputated as a result of their injuries

    - Later in June, Merlin Entertainments makes interim compensation payments to the victims

    - In September, the theme park reports a 11.4% drop in revenue compared to the year before
