    Fewer than half of children at secondary schools in Stoke-on-Trent are getting good GCSE results.

    The latest government figures, external show that 48.2% of children got five or more GCSEs at A* to C - including English and maths. 

    In Staffordshire the figure is 56.1% while Cheshire East's average is 63.2% - the national average for England is 57.1%.

    Two people seriously injured in the rollercoaster crash at Alton Towers last year will donate £6,000 to the hospital where they were treated later today.

    Joe Pugh and Leah Washington were among 16 people injured in the Smiler ride accident in June. The theme park says human error was to blame

    The money, which came from a gala dinner night, will be presented to the Royal Stoke University Hospital.

    A lawyer for a student from Cheshire who claims he was beaten and humiliated by police in Belgium has accused officers of torture.

    Elliot Meredith from Nantwich said he thought he was going to die at Saint-Gilles police station in Brussels.

    The Belgian prosecutor has opened two investigations - one into the torture allegation - and another into a claim that Mr Meredith assaulted a policeman.

    St Gilles, Anderlecht and Forest police would not comment during the inquiry.

    Staffordshire Police say the woman was outside Copper Glade when it happened and she's been taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital. 

    The force says Weston Road is blocked both ways from the Town End to Beaconside.
