    For those whose loved ones are remembered by the new memorial, today was a day of pride and poignancy.

    Naturally, there was was sadness recalling lives cut short too soon. But there was pride too in the fact they died for Queen and country.

    Tracy Dunn-Bridgeman, from Liverpool, was among those who made the journey to the National Memorial Arboretum. She lost her son Jason to the Afghanistan conflict in 2009.

    She said: "They say the Regiment's its own little family, and although the lads have all got their individual headstones, this is a family headstone for want of a better description."

    The National Trust and the Forestry Commission are among groups which could help run Cannock Chase, Staffordshire County Council, external says, as part of its review of countryside estate.

    The authority says more than 130 individuals, groups and organisations have expressed an interest in helping to run its six country parks, nine picnic areas and three disused rail lines.   

    All the options will be considered next month by the council.

    The Britannia Stadium was in fine voice last night, as 16,000 fans turned out for Andy Wilkinson's testimonial - he's been forced to retire with a head injury.

    Port Vale's "Player of the Year" Anthony Grant says he's not surprised that manager Rob Page is being linked to jobs elsewhere.

    Newly promoted Northampton are understood to be the latest club showing an interest in the Vale boss after their manager joined Sheffield United last week

  6. Rush hour rail delays after truck hits bridgepublished at 17:14 British Summer Time 17 May 2016

    A vehicle has struck a bridge, external at Rugeley Trent Valley, causing disruption to trains between Stafford / Stoke-on-Trent and Nuneaton, Network Rail reports.

    Trains are now able to run but a speed restriction will remain in place, causing delays of up to an hour until 18:00.

    Road transport is operating for London Midland passengers travelling between Stafford and Nuneaton.

    The two-month extension of garden waste collections in Stoke-on-Trent is to become a permanent fixture for residents.

  10. Hospital dealing with 'extraordinary surge in demand' in A&Epublished at 16:08 British Summer Time 17 May 2016

    The NHS Trust running Stoke-on-Trent's main hospital has told BBC Radio Stoke it is dealing with an "extraordinary surge in demand" in A&E.

    The University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, external says the Royal Stoke hospital normally sees 300 patients a day in the unit but that figure is currently more than 400. 

    The Medical Director at the trust is urging people to stay away if possible.

    Trains are being delayed by up to an hour on London Midland services and Virgin Trains between Stafford and Lichfield Trent Valley due to a vehicle hitting a bridge at Rugeley Trent Valley. 

    Tickets are being accepted on Cross Country services.

    The Nantwich heavyweight boxer Nathan Gorman has been given the opportunity to appear on the undercard of Tyson Fury's heavyweight title, external rematch with Wladimir Klitschko.

    The BBC has announced plans to close a number of websites including BBC Food and Newsbeat in a bid to save £15m.

    Proposals, subject to approval, also include ending local news index web pages, offering instead an open stream on the rolling Local Live service.

    The announcement today follows the publication of the government's White Paper on the future of the BBC, external last week.
