    A Staffordshire burglary which police say left the victim unable to sleep in his own home, external has been featured today on the BBC's Crimewatch Roadshow programme. 

    Staffordshire Police say the break-in was last August and saw Ian Alcock, 49, "savagely attacked" and cash stolen from his house on Peacocks Hay, Talke.

    Officers say despite an emotional plea for public help, a reward from charity Crimestoppers and about 40 lines of inquiry, no suspects have been identified.

    Plans to turn more hard shoulders into permanent driving lanes to ease motorway congestion - such as on the M6 in Staffordshire - should be scrapped, an MP committee says.

    The government intends to turn hundreds of miles of hard shoulder in England into permanent lanes, known as "all-lane running", to expand capacity.

    In Staffordshire, such a scheme has been introduced between junction 10a for Wolverhampton and junction 13 for Stafford.

    The Transport Select Committee said the "dramatic change" would be dangerous.

    The Department for Transport said "all-lane running" was designed to be as safe as ordinary motorways.

    An MEP's expense claims for road journeys she never made would not have been paid if it was known she had travelled more cheaply by plane, a court has been told.

    Nikki Sinclaire, West Midlands MEP until 2014, is accused of misconduct in a public office and laundering money.

    She submitted "significant" expenses "in excess of flight costs", the prosecution said.

    She denies the charges at Birmingham Crown Court and the trial continues.
