    Stoke City manager Mark Hughes says the club may consider signing a centre-back.

    The Potters are down a little on defensive cover after Marc Wilson left this week for Bournemouth - although they did sign teenage defender Ryan Sweeney earlier this month.

    "We will look at it," Hughes adds. "There are a couple of areas of the team that we feel we need to bring players in to help the rest of the guys. 

    "It is nobody specific at the moment because we have a number of targets in mind, who we are hopeful of getting over the line. It is something that may well go to the last throws of the window."

    A man's been attacked by a masked gang in the back garden of his home, external in Burton.

    A group of men turned up to the Clarence Street property, say Staffordshire Police, in the early hours of this morning. 

    Officers say they then assaulted the victim who ran off to raise the alarm - the gang then left with two mobile phones and a rucksack.

    The MP for Cheadle, Staffordshire says closing all 47 beds at the town's hospital ahead of winter "makes little sense".

    Conservative Sir Bill Cash says he wants local health bosses to come up with a different plan for the two wards, which are often used by people recovering from operations. 

    NHS bosses propose to close them this autumn, saying people prefer to be treated at home and it can improve their recovery.

    After it was revealed items including a cannabis plant, cigars and handcuffs have been stolen from Staffordshire Police, the force has moved to say its very mindful about security.

    All the forces in the West Midlands had been asked by the BBC which items had been stolen from 2011-12 to 2015-16.

    Staffordshire Police, external did admit to "rare occasions when opportunist thieves strike" - including an offender who stole cannabis from a police van while an officer was loading it after a drugs raid.

    They added that a suspect was arrested in this case and the officer involved "was later given management advice".

    This weekend's V Festival at Weston Park will be headlined by Rhianna on Saturday and Justin Bieber on Sunday, external.

    Bieber has already said he's planning the "biggest stage production" in V's 21-year history - one part will see 800 gallons of purified, 40C water soak the star at the front of the stage.

    Port Vale defender Nathan Smith says he's paying no attention to comments saying he can go on to play at a higher level.

    A train had to make an emergency stop at a level crossing in Nantwich, external after teenagers stood in the middle of the tracks, it has emerged.

    Network Rail says it happened last Friday, 12 August, at the Shrewbridge Road site as the Crewe to Cardiff train approached just before 18:00.

    The organisation says the driver sounded the horn and applied the emergency brakes but the teenagers failed to move before the train came to a stop - they then walked away. 

    Two days before, Network Rail says youngsters ran across the same level crossing as another train was approaching.

    Five teenagers, including one from Staffordshire, have admitted their part in an attack which left a football fan seriously ill.  

    Four 19-year-olds and a youth changed their pleas during a trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

    The five, and another teenager who previously admitted grievous bodily harm, will be sentenced on 9 September.
