    Port Vale's new goalkeeper, Deniz Mehmet , is waiting to find out if he'll make his first-team debut for the club in tomorrow's game at Southend.

    The 24-year-old ex-West Ham United youth team player and Falkirk goalkeeper played a full game for the reserves on Wednesday, having joined the club this week.

    Health bosses have denied reports that Leek Hospital is set to close, external in September. 

    In a joint statement, Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) say no final decision has yet been made on its future.

    They say that they're commenting after media coverage of a "misconception" that the hospital is shutting. 

    The CCGs say that nothing will be decided without a full public consultation, which is due to take place in May, once it's approved by NHS England.

    A proposed new deputy police and crime commissioner "failed to demonstrate an adequate knowledge and understanding" of the role, councillors said.

    Labour councillor, Sareda Dirir, has been nominated by Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner David Keane to become his £50,000-a-year deputy.

    Members of the county's police and crime panel were not impressed by her performance in a confirmation hearing.

    But she meets the "minimum standard", the advisory panel concluded.

    Mr Keane is due to make a final decision about whether to appoint Ms Dirir next week.

    Veterans of an Army regiment say a "mad idea" led to them buying the lease of a pub where it was founded.

    The Staffordshire Regiment Association said it paid £64,000 to buy a 10-year lease on The King's Head in Lichfield.

    The regiment was founded in 1705 when Col Luke Lillingston raised a force which later became the Staffords. 

    Capt Dave Donnelly said: "It's brilliant. We believe we have bought a piece of history." 

    He said the purchase was prompted by a "mad idea" by ex-Warrant Officer Derek Watts, from Wolverhampton, who went on social media to drum up support.

  10. Liverpool Lime Street 'should reopen on Thursday'published at 11:42 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2017

    Train passengers going from Stoke-on-Trent and Crewe to Liverpool Lime Street should see the Merseyside station reopen on Thursday, Network Rail says. 

    A train carrying 150 passengers  was "seconds away" from crashing into a huge pile of debris , the RMT union said.

    An  estimated 200 tonnes of rubble  fell on to the line when a wall collapsed just outside Liverpool Lime Street station at 17:45 on Tuesday.

    Northern Rail confirmed the driver of its Manchester Airport to Liverpool service hit the emergency brake after a red signal was triggered.

    Three puppies have died after being abandoned, external in a car park in Staffordshire.

    The RSPCA say the litter of five was found in a box off Baker Street, Stoke-on-Trent, on Sunday and they still had their umbilical cords attached.

    They say one was already dead when they were found and the others were examined by a vet, but two more died shortly afterwards.

    The RSPCA says they also all showed symptoms of possible carbon monoxide poisoning.

  15. Three jailed after house rammed by lorry in 'ongoing feud'published at 10:23 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2017

    Three men have been jailed after a stolen lorry was repeatedly rammed into house while children were sleeping "as part of an ongoing feud". 

    Staffordshire Police say the home on Broadfield Road, Stoke-on-Trent, suffered "significant damage" in November 2015.

    Officers say the attack was "extensively and carefully planned" to intimidate a local family as part of a feud between members from the travelling community.  , external

    The three men had already pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit criminal damage, being reckless to the endangerment of life. 

    They were jailed yesterday while a women was given a suspended prison sentence after admitting the same offence. 

    A fifth man was given a suspended jail term after pleading guilty to conspiracy to steal motor vehicles - a sixth man is due to be sentenced today after admitting the same offence.
