    Labour's Laura Smith says she's "blown away" at gaining the Crewe and Nantwich seat from the Conservatives by 48 votes.

    The defending MP was Edward Timpson, a government minister, external who'd held it since 2008 when he took it from Labour.

    But, after several recounts, the slim victory was declared for the Labour candidate.

    The voters of Newcastle-under-Lyme have been thanked by the re-elected Labour MP Paul Farrelly.

    In a close contest, he held off a Conservative challenge from Owen Meredith by just 30 votes.

    He told BBC Radio Stoke that, despite the small margin, Labour had a good night.

    Jack Brereton took a seat that Labour has held since 1935 by defeating the incumbent Rob Flello.

    Theresa May has no intention of resigning, according to BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg.

    The prime minister is understood to be working to form a government based on being the biggest party in terms of both seats and votes.

    There are 62 constituencies in the West Midlands region, they've all now declared.

    The Conservatives have 39 seats, Labour 24 and the Liberal Democrats have none.

    Houses of Parliament

    Three seats changed hands - Walsall North; Stoke-on-Trent South; and Warwick and Leamington.

    Walsall North was lost by Labour.

    Stoke-on-Trent South was won by the Tories.

    Warwick and Leamington was lost by the Conservatives.

  11. Keele students 'stopped from voting by admin error'published at 07:04 British Summer Time 9 June 2017

    An election story that came in late last night was that some students at Keele University said they had been unable to vote.

    They said it was after being told their "names were not on the list" at polling stations.

    Keele Students Union Council chairman Tom Snape said up to 100 students had contacted it about problems so far.

    Labour's now victorious MP in the seat, Paul Farrelly, told the Independent he was going to report the borough council to the Electoral Commission over the "shambles".

    Newcastle-Under-Lyme Borough Council said it would investigate the reports.

    The Conservatives have held Stone with Bill Cash polling 31,614 votes, a majority of 17,495.

    Labour's Sam Halehad 14,119 and turnout was 73.8% with Mr Cash polling 63.2%.

    Well, for those of you waking up, it hadn't been a night of any upsets in Staffordshire or the south part of Cheshire until after 05:00.

    We saw plenty of MPs holding their seats, some with increased or decreased majorities.

    But then, after 05:00, came the first big shock - when Conservative Jack Brereton took the Stoke-on-Trent South seat from Labour.

    We are still waiting on two more seats where the races are tight and ballots are being recounted - Crewe and Nantwich and Newcastle-under-Lyme.
