    Dozens of schools across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent are closed after overnight snow and ice.

    The wintry conditions have affected the whole of the county and many schools say the roads and pavements around them are "treacherous".

    As of 10:00, there were 14 schools shut in Staffordshire, external and 23 in Stoke-on-Trent.

    A woman in her 60s has suffered serious burns in a house fire in Crewe.

    The woman was taken to a specialist burns unit on Merseyside after the blaze on Edie Grove, just after 16:00 yesterday, the fire service said.

    Most Virgin West Coast services will still run during today's strike, the company said, but Chester and north Wales will not be served for most of the day.

    A replacement bus service will be laid on between Chester and Crewe, due to flooding, and Arriva Trains Wales will accept tickets between Chester and north Wales stations.

    Virgin Trains will run two services per hour in each direction between London and Manchester via Stoke.

    Passengers have been warned to check their travel arrangements before heading to the station and to expect the services that are running to be busier than normal.

    Virgin rail workers in the region are staging a 24-hour strike later in the first of a number of walkouts across the UK.

    Rail, Maritime and Transport union and Transport Salaried Staffs Association members on Virgin Trains West Coast will strike over pay and staffing.

    Virgin said it had offered a "significantly above inflation pay rise", but unions rejected it.

    A man had to be cut free from his vehicle after it overturned on the A500 in Staffordshire this morning.

    The crash happened shortly after 01:00 just before junction 16 for the M6.

    He was taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life threatening, the ambulance service said.

    Ten flood alerts remain in place this morning after more heavy rain, and in some cases snow, fell overnight.

    Low-level flood barriers have gone up in Frankwell, in Shrewsbury (pictured).

    An alert is in place for the full length of the River Severn through Shropshire, which is expected to peak at Buildwas on Friday night.

    Alerts are also in place in Shropshire on the Worfe, the Severn-Vyrnwy conflunece, the upper Teme, and the Tern and Perry catchments.

    Alerts are also in place on the Wye and Arrow in Herefordshire, and the River Lugg outside of Leominster.

    The Lower Dove Brooks, River Sow and River Penk, River Churnet and River Tean in Staffordshire, and the Anker and Sence outside Atherstone are also affected.

    A yellow warning for ice is in place for part of the North West until 11:00. Icy patches are expected on untreated routes.

    It will feel chilly with a brisk northerly breeze, along with sunny spells and scattered showers, which could turn wintry. Highs of 5C.

    The weather overnight is affecting a number roads in Staffordshire and Cheshire - Cheshire Police says it's had multiple calls about flooding and collisions

    Snow has closed the A53 Leek Road in both directions between the A54 Macclesfield Main Road and Mount Road.

    Police are advising drivers to avoid the road if possible as there are also broken-down vehicles in the area.

    The company behind the new HS2 high-speed rail line, has been criticised for making £1.7m of unauthorised redundancy payments that were a "shocking waste of taxpayers' money".

    The Public Accounts Committee said the firm overseeing construction of the high-speed rail line offered staff terms "well in excess" of authorised levels.

    They were made last year when the government-owned company decided to relocate staff from its London office to Birmingham and offered redundancy for those who were no longer needed or were unwilling to move.

    An HS2 spokesperson acknowledged "a serious error" had been made.

    Despite strikes on Virgin Trains, the firm is expecting to run two services per hour in each direction between London and the West Midlands, National Rail Enquiries says.

    Other operators serving routes between Birmingham and London are running services as normal.

    Workers on Virgin Trains West Coast are holding the first of six 24-hour strikes from this morning.

    The RMT union says just under 2,000 train managers, on-board catering staff, station and clerical workers will be involved in the action.

    The union is calling for a pay offer for all its members that equals the amount given to train drivers.
