  2. £70m crossing pledge 'the news that Lowestoft was waiting to hear'published at 17:44 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2016

    Peter Aldous, the Conservative MP for Waveney, says David Cameron's pledge of £70m for the third water crossing "is the news that Lowestoft has been waiting to hear".

    "The prime minister promised this prior to the last general election, committing the government to a new crossing by 2020," Mr Aldous said.

    "Now with this pledge of £70m we have the funding in place to get on with the detail planning to finally bring about a third crossing over Lake Lothing and the positive impact this will have on the local economy."

    A grant of £96,610 has been awarded to Newmarket Town Football Club, external to carry out extensive improvements to their ground.

    The grant comes from the Football Stadia Improvement Fund, external, one of the largest providers of cash to non-league football in England. It will pay for a new changing room, perimeter fencing and replacement of floodlights.

    The club's existing natural grass pitch is also being replaced with a third generation artificial grass surface.

    Four men who were filmed hanging off high buildings have been given Criminal Behaviour Orders and fined £100 each for causing alarm and distress to residents.

    Javier Centeno-Gomez, 24, of Ellough, Matthew Adams, 23, Daniel Batchelor, 26, and a 17-year-old boy, all from Lowestoft, pleaded guilty to disorderly behaviour at Lowestoft Magistrates' Court on Thursday.

    The court saw footage from head cameras, showing the group hanging off the side of St Peters Court in Lowestoft, 15 storeys above the ground. Individuals were also seen climbing on a large crane at Clapham Road and one was spotted parachuting from the wind turbine at Kessingland.

    Police said they had no alternative but to take action due to the extreme danger of their actions, repeatedly carried out and posted on the internet.

  8. Lowestoft crossing money 'a great moment for the people of Lowestoft'published at 16:00 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2016

    Following the news that the government is to pledge £70m towards a third water crossing at Lowestoft in tomorrow's budget, Suffolk County Council says the rest of the money towards the £80-100m build will come from "local funding sources".

    Colin Noble, leader of the Conservative-run council, said: "This is a great moment for the people of Lowestoft and Suffolk. I am very pleased to hear the news that we have been given the go-ahead for our business case.

    "We can now plough on with developing this project further and move towards construction. It will provide vital regional infrastructure for Suffolk and the wider eastern counties."

    Faults on four level crossings between Ipswich and Elmswell on the Bury St Edmunds line are disrupting train services.

    Delays and cancellations are expected until early evening while Network Rail engineers work to fix the problems, Abellio Greater Anglia said. 

    Trains affected are between London Liverpool Street and Norwich, Ipswich and Cambridge and Ipswich and Peterborough, in both directions.

    At one point yesterday, during what chief executive Nick Hulme said was Ipswich Hospital A&E's busiest weekday ever, 15 patients were being treated or assessed in corridors.

    Mr Hulme said this was not a good patient experience and even took the step of personally asking people to consider seeking a GP appointment or visiting a pharmacy instead. In 24 hours, 297 patients were treated.

    "We've got to look at alternative ways of treating people who believe they have urgent needs," Mr Hulme said.

    Ipswich Town striker Luke Varney says he is "hungry" for action as he prepares for the prospect of facing his old club Blackburn Rovers tonight.

    Since returning from a long-term injury, 33-year-old Varney's been mostly used as a substitute, but says he's ready if needed. "I feel like it's coming up to Christmas, it's my time!" he said.

    "I'm hoping the season gets extended with the play-offs and we get as much football as we can. I feel hungry and still ready to go. Whatever minutes I get, hopefully I'll have a positive impression on the squad."

    Colin Law, the leader of Waveney District Council, says David Cameron's promise of "over £70m over Lake Lothing in Lowestoft is "one of the most important announcements in the history of the town".

    A former leader of Suffolk County Council has welcomed the news that the government is to spend "over £70m" on a third water crossing for Lowestoft.

    Councillor Mark Bee said: "There's a saying in Lowestoft that the second coming will happen before the third crossing, and today that's been turned on its head."

    The Prime Minister David Cameron made the funding announcement during a visit to the Port of Felixstowe this morning.
