    A former Suffolk speedway official has been jailed for sex offences involving a young girl.

    John Fitch, 77, from Fletchers Lane in Kesgrave, was given a sentence of three years and four months at Ipswich Crown Court, for two cases of indecent assault during the 1990s. 

    For many years Fitch was the race-starter for the Ipswich Witches speedway meetings at the Foxhall stadium. He denied four other charges, which will now remain on file.

    Mick McCarthy has quelled Ipswich fans' fears that Liam Feeney's arrival at Town means fellow winger Ryan Fraser (pictured) won't be returning to Portman Road.

    The Scotsman is currently back at his parent club Bournemouth receiving treatment on the hamstring injury that has kept him out of the Blues' last eight matches. 

    "They can both play on either wing and hopefully Ryan will be on the coach for the Wolves game," McCarthy said. "If he's not, there's not a lot we can do about it."

    Of course it wasn't just a protest - it was also a fairly blatant bit of self-promotion.

    Former Ipswich Town striker James Alabi says he has more freedom to express himself at new club Chester City.

    The 21-year-old made the switch from Portman Road at the end of January, and has scored five goals from six starts for the National League Club.

    "This is just a taste of what I can do," Alabi said. " I am more relaxed and free to play without fear of any loan moves coming up."

    Suffolk's rural crime officer has called for tougher sentences for anyone found guilty of causing animal cruelty.

    Figures released today show 1,861 cases of cruelty against animals were dealt with by the RSPCA in Suffolk last year. The figures were considerably higher in Essex (4,641), Norfolk (2,689) and Cambridgeshire (2,351).

    PC Mark Bryant said: "What would work better in things like this is to have a minimum sentence (rather than a maximum) then everybody knows where they stand."

    Supporters of East Anglian devolution are lobbying government ministers to intervene to stop the deal from collapsing.

    The Chancellor George Osborne announced the proposals for an elected mayor covering Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk in his budget but there are now concerns among local MPs that the plan is starting to unravel.

    At Westminster, Conservative MPs from the region have, off the record, used words like "shambles", "dog's dinner"  and "not properly thought through" to describe the current state of play.

    A teenager from Luton's been arrested by police investigating a series of Suffolk burglaries, external; three of which involved violence. 

    The 18-year-old will be questioned about five break-ins and attempted burglaries which all happened since the start of the year.

    Police say one robbery in Tattingstone last week saw a man in his 70s assaulted.

    Emergency loan deals will be outlawed from next season and former Ipswich striker James Alabi says he welcomes the change.

    The 21-year-old played just 50 minutes of competitive football for the Blues, scoring one goal in the process, before he was sent out on a short-term deal to Grimsby. 

    "You don’t get enough time to adapt at a club and show what you can do, especially if you get injured," said Alabi, who is now at Chester.

    Police say a man who collapsed while jogging near Fiveways at Barton Mills early this morning is in a stable condition in hospital and has now been identified.

    The owner of Orfordness Lighthouse says its future is "very precarious" and this is possibly the last year the public will be able to visit the listed building.

    As reported in the East Anglian Daily Times, external, Nicholas Gold has been thanking the public for raising £10,000 to pay for temporary defences to stop the sea from causing further damage.

    The trust says it would ideally like to re-locate the lighthouse to the other side of the estuary, but that would require even more money.

    A campaigner against a housing development in East Bergholt says the council has "bulldozed the decision through". 

    Peter Dent made his comments after Babergh District councillors voted in support of a planning application to construct 144 homes off Moore's Lane.

    About 80 protesters attended this morning's meeting in Hadleigh.

    The East of England Ambulance Service, external says patients who completed a recent survey described the care they received as "brilliant", "excellent" and "first class".

    Three hundred and sixty eight patients who were treated in January were sent the survey, external, with 106 completing it. The trust said 98% of respondents said they were either very satisfied, satisfied or fairly satisfied with the level of care received.

    Although the majority of the responses were positive, one patient said there had been an "unacceptable length of delay" waiting for an ambulance to arrive.

    Suffolk Police says its recruitment freeze is over and it hopes to hire 100 new officers this year, external.

    The turnaround came after a possible increase in the council tax was announced in Chancellor George Osborne's Autumn Statement.

    Police and Crime Commissioner Tim Passmore said: "When I made the decision to raise the policing element of the council tax I promised that the extra funds created would fund extra officers. I am delighted to see that the recruitment process has now started."

  17. Police try to identify jogger who collapsedpublished at 14:39 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2016

    Police are trying to identify a man who collapsed while jogging near the Fiveways roundabout at Barton Mills this morning.

    The jogger was found at about 07:15 and taken to hospital, but police say despite "significant efforts" they've been unable to identify him.

    He is described as being in his 40s to 50s and was wearing navy shorts and a green zip-up top.

  18. Lego version of Bury St Edmunds landmark createdpublished at 14:28 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2016

    A Lego replica of Abbey Gate has gone on display at Moyse’s Hall Museum in Bury St Edmunds.

    The 6,000 brick, 1:40 scale model, has taken Lego builder Rhys Knight about 90 hours to complete.

    Mr Knight, who last month visited the town to deliver a Lego version of the 12th Century Moyse’s Hall, arrived today with his 34x38x54cm Abbey Gate replica.

    The model has been commissioned to coincide with the town’s Brick City exhibition, which since opening on 16 January has attracted more than 10,400 visitors.
