Earlier, we brought you the news that a man has admitted causing the crash which resulted in footballer Shaun Whiter, who works in Stansted, having both legs amputated and another player suffering serious injuries.

Jan Adamec, 40, of Shetland Road, Haverhill, admitted two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, in a hearing at Cambridge Crown Court. He will be sentenced in September.  

PC Ashley Bennett, from Cambridgeshire Police, said social media had played a large part in finding the driver after the accident in July.

The 21-year-old, who's on loan from Everton, was also introduced at half-time and showed why manager Mick McCarthy was so keen to bring him to the club.

"He's got a lot to offer. He's a calm individual and a lovely footballer," said McCarthy. 

"He's one of them who can manipulate the ball; someone like (Cardiff's) Peter Whittingham, somebody of that ilk, with that quality. That's who he reminds me of."

A family friend of Woodbridge man David Wood, who's been missing since he went walking in the French Alps last Tuesday, has described him as a "very gregarious, fun-loving guy".

Simon Cotter says his friendship with Mr Wood goes back "as far as I can remember". He used to spend a lot of time with Mr Wood's sons Danny and Rich, and says "all through my teenage years, Val [Mr Wood's wife] and Dave have always been people that I've been able to go to with any problems."

He describes his friend's disappearance as "an utterly surreal situation".

We brought you news earlier of criticism by the chairman of Newmarket Town FC over the length of time it has taken ambulances to arrive when two players were injured on separate occasions.

Referring to the second incident, which took place yesterday, a spokesman for the East of England Ambulance NHS Trust said: "We would like to apologise to the patient for the ambulance wait and any further distress this may have caused him and we hope that he is making a strong recovery.

"We received a call yesterday (7 August) at 14:32 to reports of a man who had injured his leg whilst playing football in Halstead. 

"Unfortunately due to an extremely high level of life threatening calls that day which saw more than a total 3,200 999 calls received regionally and more than 1,000 of those coming from Essex, we were able to have an ambulance on scene by 17:17 which took him to Colchester General Hospital for further care. 

"During that time a clinician in our control room made a welfare call to the patient to ensure that his condition had not worsened but if the patient or his family have any other questions or concerns we would urge them to contact us.”

The Republic of Ireland pair got the nod ahead of Freddie Sears, who played wide, and Brett Pitman, who was on the bench. 

"If anyone's watched us over the last four years since I've been here they've been the best partnership, without a doubt," said McCarthy.

"It would be lovely to rekindle that partnership but I've got Freddie and Brett who aren't going to lie down and let them have the positions so it's nice to have competition for places."

Newmarket Town FC, external has called the service from East of England Ambulance Trust "an absolute joke", saying there have been two occasions in less than a week where there have been long waits for ambulances to arrive after players have been injured.

The latest took place yesterday at Halstead Town. Newmarket Town chairman John Olive said: "We had a player go down at 14:30, and he laid on the ground to just past 17:30 when the ambulance crew arrived.

"The medical advice was not to move him. We rang several times to find out what was happening. It seems their procedure is that they cannot tell you what the ETA is or what it's likely to be. We got concerned because he'd been on the ground for so long. 

"This is the second time: we had an under-18 boy on Wednesday with a broken leg, where the ambulance arrived after an hour and 20 minutes wait and actually his father was told that he should take him to hospital."

We've put a call in to the ambulance service, and are awaiting its response.

Concerns are growing for a British man missing since last Tuesday while walking alone in the French Alps.

Ipswich Town, external striker Brett Pitman will have to wait a little longer before making his first start of the season.

The 28-year-old, who came on as a substitute against Barnsley on Saturday, was set to start tomorrow's EFL Cup tie against Stevenage, but picked up an injury in training yesterday.

"It was late on in the session when he went to hit a ball and felt his thigh," said manager Mick McCarthy. "He's got a bit of fluid on it and we're hoping it's not going to keep him out too long."

CCTV footage of a motorcyclist arriving and leaving Melton Station on the night a woman was raped has been released by British Transport Police.

They believe he has "essential information" which will assist in their investigation.

The attack happened at about 22:00 on Tuesday, 19 July, when a woman entered the station and sat on a bench waiting for a train to Ipswich.

Shortly after this, a man arrived, confronted her on the platform, and sexually assaulted her.

Det Supt Gary Richardson said: "I hope by releasing this footage we might be able to identify this man who we believe holds vital information. Likewise, we think this may jog the memory of anyone who may have been in the vicinity of Melton Station that evening.” 

Neighbours of a business in Lowestoft have all returned to their homes after being moved to safety last night following a fire.

Twenty homes were evacuated, with power turned off for 80 properties as a precaution.

The blaze broke out at a workshop and adjoining shed, containing gas cylinders, on Long Road.

South district commander Ian Mallet said: "The crews have to make a risk assessment on the site and the scene that they're faced with and ensure the public safety, which is why the decision was made to evacuate the nearby premises pretty quickly.

"We scaled up the incident for further crews to attend and deal with the situation."

A man serving an indeterminate sentence for attempted murder, grievous bodily harm and actual bodily harm is missing from Hollesley Bay Prison, external, near Woodbridge.

Gavin Owens, 33, who was last seen at the prison at 23:00 last night, was reported missing at about 08:40 this morning.

Police say that the public shouldn't approach Owens, who has links with the Hinckley area of Leicestershire.

An Ipswich Town supporter who "died" and was revived in the stairwell of Portman Road's Pioneer Stand in April, has had a unique message put on his Town shirt.

Ralph Crich, 48, who had had a heart attack previously, was watching Ipswich play Fulham when his heart started racing. He said paramedics came to have a look and while he was talking to stewards at the ground, "...my heart stopped and I went into cardiac arrest and 'died' in the stairwell of the Pioneer Stand".

He said he had to be "jump-started" with a defribillator.

A Town supporter since 1978, he was back at the ground three weeks later: "I was back on the pitch handing out the Player of the Month trophy to Bartosz (Bialkowski).

"It was just a great day... people knew who I was, and it was just great fun."

Mildenhall Fen Tigers, external are waiting to hear the extent of Kyle Hughes shoulder injury sustained in yesterday's memorable 45-44 victory over Kent Kings, external at West Row.

The Suffolk side were 13 points down at one stage, before turning the meeting on its head in the last five heats.

"I am so proud of our lads today who fought back so well in the second half of the meeting, although this is somewhat tempered by Kyle Hughes injury," said chairman Kevin Jolly.

"Kyle has had no luck at all this season and hopefully his injury isn't as bad as initially thought.”

The 26-year-old was the odd man out as Christophe Berra was picked to partner new signing Adam Webster in central defence.

"I didn't like doing it but that's what I'm paid for. Tommy accepted it with good grace," said McCarthy.

"He didn't like it, and isn't happy about it, but he's not come in with his face tripping him, he's been a model professional which I'd expect him to be."
