Newman suffered a fractured shoulder and torn muscles while racing for Poole on Friday night and missed the Witches' season opener with Sheffield 24 hours later.

Serjeant knows Foxhall well having been part of the team that made the play-offs last season, and has something of a point to prove to the Witches management team having not been retained for 2017.

The 23-year-old had initially been left without a club for 2017, following the demise of Coventry Bees.

  2. Butcher believes 'stubborn' McCarthy will stay at Ipswichpublished at 10:26 British Summer Time 28 March 2017

Ever since an under-pressure McCarthy told us he would consider his position at the end of the current campaign, the bulk of speculation has tended to link him with a move away from Suffolk.

"He's a stubborn Yorkshireman. I think he's been hurt by this season and all the criticism and he'll want to prove people wrong," Butcher said.

"He needs to be given a fair crack of the whip, though, in terms of more money from the owner."

"Mick's been able to bring in some good loan players in recent seasons like Ryan Fraser, but he really needs to be getting players like him to Portman Road on permanent deals."
