A crackdown on the drug trade, related violence and anti-social behaviour in Ipswich has resulted in 105 arrests over the past three months.

Operation Woven was launched in March with the aim to deter and disrupt crime connected to groups of individuals known to each other, much of it drug related, police said.

The operation will continue into August after police seized large quantities of drugs, cash, drugs paraphernalia and weapons.

Supt Kerry Cutler said: "This operation was only initially intended to be in place for six weeks, but due to its overwhelming success and the support of our partners we have extended this to six months, so it will now run until the end of August.

"Drugs are a cancer that can lead to addiction, debt and violence which many people struggle to break free from, and only through education and the chance of better opportunities can we hope to prevent people from falling into this lifestyle."

A war veteran is "over the moon" after the goggles he was thought to have been wearing during an air crash in 1945 were found by a historian.

Bob Koppen, now aged 91, was the only survivor after two American B-17 bombers collided over Mandres-en-Barrois in France.

The accident killed three civilians and 17 of his colleagues from the 34th Bomb Group based near Mendlesham in Suffolk.

Historian Anne Grimshaw, from Sudbury, has tracked him down to Florida - 72 years later.

They have exchanged more than 20 letters and Mr Koppen is "over the moon" and "delighted" about the discovery of the goggles, which are "very likely to have been his," Miss Grimshaw said.

She is now searching for a suitable museum to donate the goggles to.

An academy in Lowestoft is recovering after a critical report by education watchdog Ofsted, external with the support of parents, its principal has said.

The Ormiston Denes Academy, external required improvement in all categories including quality of teaching and leadership, inspectors said in a report.

Concerns were also raised over some pupil behaviour and absence rates.

Principal Ben Driver said parents are backing his plans to improve standards.

"Parents have been enormously supportive of changes we've put in place this year and have been very keen to see the school continue to move forward," he said.

A schoolboy was killed by an air rifle after it was accidentally discharged by his friend, an inquest heard.Ben Wragge, 13, was fatally wounded in Thurston, Suffolk, on 1 May 2016. An inquest into his death was told he was hit in the neck by the gun which had no safety catch, was fitted with a silencer and could fire without the trigger being pulled.

One of his friends had been holding the weapon and focusing on trees at the time of the accident, Det Insp Kevin Hayward, of Suffolk Police, said.

Recording a conclusion of accidental death at the inquest in Ipswich, Suffolk senior coroner Dr Peter Dean asked that the Home Office review the individual circumstances and the legislation around the use of airguns. Two teenage boys were initially arrested on suspicion of manslaughter before being told they faced no further action in July 2016.

The firm says the drink is increasing in popularity as beer sales fall - and Adnams is one of Suffolk's major brewers.

Ipswich Witches, external will be at full strength for tonight's top of the table Championship Speedway clash at Foxhall Stadium.

The Suffolk side have won all of their meetings at home so far this season, but Director of Speedway Chris Louis says that impressive record will be severely challenged later.

"They are flying high. They are top of the table and full of confidence," Louis told us.

"They have a whole host of riders that now our track well, so this will undoubtedly be the toughest test for us."

Ahead of the meeting, Witches fans will be delighted with the news that Australian rider has been declared fit to race.

The two times Elite League riders champion had been struggling with an injury sustained during last week's meeting with Newcastle.

The family of a Suffolk teenager who died after he was hit in the neck by an air rifle pellet wants to prevent anyone else suffering a devastating loss.

Ben Wragge, 13, died at West Suffolk Hospital after the incident at a friend's home in Thurston near Bury St Edmunds last May.

The inquest heard the air rifle was fitted with a silencer so it wasn't clear it had gone off.

When Ben said: "Ow!", his friends thought he was pretending.

He was with a group of friends, who'd been handling an air rifle, which belonged to the father of one of them, who was a licensed shotgun and firearms holder.

The family believes other similar "devastating" incidents could occur "if the law on gun use isn't tightened," the inquest at Suffolk Coroner's Court in Ipswich has heard.

Ipswich Witches, external versus Edinburgh Monarchs at Foxhall tonight is undoubtedly the biggest meeting of the Championship Speedway season to date.

The Monarchs currently top the table, while the Witches have won all of their fixtures at home in dominant fashion.

Australian rider Rory Schlein has played a massive part in the Suffolk side's success so far this campaign, but there had been doubts over the 32-year-old's fitness coming into this one.

The two times Elite League Riders Champion suffered an injury during last week's victory over Newcastle, but Director of Speedway Chris Louis says he is fit to race.

"He thought it was ligament problems, but it turned out to be a hamstring problem," Louis told us.

"He has been resting that this week as it's pretty much all you can do with a hamstring. He feels pretty much one hundred per cent, and doesn't envisage any problems."

A 48-year-old man, from Oulton, has been jailed for four years and three months after pleading guilty to assaulting and stabbing his partner.

Peter Edwards was arrested by armed officers when police responded to a call on 29 January.

Shouting, swearing and a woman crying could be heard, Ipswich Crown Court was told.

The victim said she had been stabbed and said Edwards had also tried to stab her adult son.

They managed to lock Edwards outside the house but he was still carrying the knife and damaged their car.

Edwards, of Dunston Drive, Oulton, was later charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, attempted assault on the woman's son and criminal damage to the vehicle.

Before coming to trial he changed his plea to guilty.

The train service between Norwich and London, via Ipswich and Colchester, is back up and running.

The line between Chelmsford and Witham had been closed after a person was hit by a train, but it has now reopened.

Delays are still expected until 12:00.

George Pinner's rise through the England and Great Britain hockey ranks in recent years has been a joy to watch as both a reporter and fan of sport in Suffolk.

The 30-year-old, who excelled at hockey at Ipswich School before enjoying major success at club sides Beeston and Holcombe, will line-up for England in the World League Semi Final, external from next week.

Along with teammates Phil Roper and Ian Sloan, goalkeeper Pinner was recently named as one of three new captains for the side, and he has every belief that the new regime will work.

"I'd say I am more down the traditional shout and grab the bull by the horns captaincy you would traditionally see in football, a Tony Adams type," Pinner told us.

"Ian is more of an arm around the shoulder type of guy while Phil sits in the middle, so I think we complement each other really well."

Trains between Norwich and London, via Ipswich and Colchester, are disrupted this morning as we're told a person has been hit by a train.

Greater Anglia say that all trains have been stopped just before Chelmsford whilst the emergency services attend to the incident.

A very limited Rail Replacement Bus service will operate between Chelmsford and Witham, but in order to get to that you'd have to get to Colchester and change, so if you're travelling from Norwich your best bet is to go via Cambridge, where your tickets will be accepted.

National Rail says disruption is expected until around 11:00.

In a week's time at hockey's World League Semi Final, external in London, England fans will get to see the team's new captaincy structure in action for the first time.

Suffolk's George Pinner was recently named as one of three skippers (along with Phil Roper and Ian Sloan) following the decision by Barry Middleton to step away from the role.

But three captains? Might that confuse things or can this really work? Well, Pinner for one believes it can.

"I think it's good. We all have different positions on the pitch and we are all on the same page," the 30-year-old told us.

"The nice thing about is that as three individuals there are differences in how we lead and our leadership qualities that make us a nice mix."

England take on China in their opening match next Thursday, with the event at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre, external serving as a qualifier for next year's World Cup.

The pilot of a paramotor - also known as a powered paraglider - hopes he has achieved a record by flying from Wales to Suffolk.

Flt Lt Giles Fowler flew from the old RAF Brawdy, external in Wales to Beccles in Suffolk yesterday.

The 300 mile (500km) journey was to raise money for Cancer Research, external.

Mr Fowler said he was "very weary and tired" but added that he hoped it was a record journey of more than six hours for a paramotor.

Teenager Ben Wragge died after an air gun pellet became lodged in his neck, a hearing last year revealed.

The 13-year-old from Great Ashfield, Suffolk, was fatally wounded at a friend's house in Thurston on 1 May.

The friends had been passing the air gun around when the pellet hit the left side of the boy's neck, police said.

Two teenage boys were initially arrested on suspicion of manslaughter, then told they faced no further action.

A police spokesman said there had been a "full investigation" into the circumstances of Ben's death.
