    Local resident Andy Watts told BBC Look East he was walking his dog near the area and "heard a gunshot and then I heard a great big scream".

    "That's all I can say. It was a quick as that. It sounded like scaffolding falling down originally because it was a big, big crash," he said.

    "I saw them working on the young lad over on the green, he was over there for quite a while, while they were attending to him, a lot of ambulance staff and paramedics working on him."

    A police helicopter is also flying above head around the Valley Road area.

    It has not been confirmed yet whether this is linked to the shooting in Kesgrave.

    Police said the shooting happened in the Grange Farm area of Kesgrave.

    The 15-year-old boy was on his way to Kesgrave High School at the time and is currently in hospital with serious injuries.

    Assistant Chief Constable Rob Jones, from Suffolk Police, said: "Following this serious incident our priority is to keep everyone safe.

    "We have now made an arrest as part of the investigation and are working with our partners in Suffolk and our schools to ensure that everyone feels safe when they are collecting their children from school this afternoon.

    "There will be more police officers on patrol and to provide reassurance in the area and I would ask for anyone with information about this incident to come forward.”

    Police said the 15-year-old boy suffered serious injuries in the shooting and was airlifted to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, where he is "receiving urgent medical attention".

    The force added a teenage boy has been arrested and is in police custody for questioning.

    Kesgrave High School, on the town's Main Road, has 1,870 pupils aged between 11 and 18, according to Ofsted's website.

    It was most recently inspected in December 2017, when it received a "good" rating.

    In an update on the school's website ahead of its new term this month, Monday was the first day Year 9 and 11 pupils would be back in school for the new academic term as part of the gradual return of students.

    The pupil involved in the reported shooting is thought to be in Year 11.

    Kesgrave High School put a statement out on social media following the reported shooting.

    Here it is in full:

    "We have made aware by the police that there has been a serious incident involving one of our Year 11 students, on their way to school.

    "Students in school are safe and we are managing the situation in constant, close communication with the police.

    "Students are to remain in school and will be kept safe in liaison with the police.

    "Police will be present in the area and around the school throughout the school day.

    "At the present time we are expecting students to be dismissed at the end of the school day, 15:20 BST, as normal."

    What we know so far:

    • Suffolk Police were called just after 08:40 BST on Monday morning to reports of a shooting in the Through Jollys and Friends Walk areas of the Grange Farm estate in Kesgrave.
