  2. Southern Rail Criticismpublished at 09:34 British Summer Time 14 October 2016

Rail travellers are being badly let down, according to an influential committee of MPs.

A report by the Transport Select Committee criticises complicated ticketing systems, overcrowding and a lack of access for disabled passengers.

It also condemns the government's handling of rail franchises, and singles out the "woeful" experience of Southern passengers, who have faced months of industrial action and staff shortages.

The family of a biker paralysed from the chest downwards in a freak accident are trying to raise funds which will enable him to remain in his current home.

Carl Martin, 36, from Copthorne in West Sussex, suffered life-changing spinal injuries while taking part in a motorcycle track day at Brands Hatch, in Kent, just over two weeks ago.

His wife Zoe, 34, said he had also fractured his neck, broken all his ribs, and punctured a lung.

The field service technician is being treated at a London hospital, but will eventually be transferred to a specialist rehabilitation facility.

Mrs Martin said he was "an amazing dad" to their two-year-old daughter, Jessica, and was remaining positive and focusing on being able to return home.

"He's already looking at what sport to master for the next Paralympic Games," she added.

Family friend Sarah Kiely has set up a fund to raise money to pay for building works needed to adapt the family home for use by someone in a wheelchair.

She said: "No amount of money can reverse what has happened but financial help can stop the constant worry.

"To be able to stay in their forever family home would be incredible."

Mrs Martin said the family had already received offers of help from tradesmen and other people, for which they were very thankful.
