  10. RMT: Southern 'bulldozing through' changespublished at 18:06 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2017

The RMT has reacted angrily to the breakdown of talks between themselves and Southern Rail.

General Secretary Mick Cash said Southern had a "pig-headed attitude" which has "wrecked" the talks.

    Quote Message

Our negotiating team is furious at the way this union and its members have been treated.

    Quote Message

This is dire news not just for staff but for passengers who rightly demand a safe, reliable and accessible service. I will now take a full report back to the unions executive."

Mick Cash, General Secretary of the RMT

  11. Southern talks: 'We’re saddened it’s ended so prematurely.published at 17:59 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2017

Talks between Southern and the RMT union have ended without agreement, according to Acas.

    Quote Message

We came to today’s meeting hopeful we could find a way forward to end the RMT’s dispute and we’re saddened it’s ended so prematurely. The travelling public will find the union’s obstinate refusal to engage in meaningful and constructive talks disappointing, disheartening and increasingly destructive.

    Quote Message

Over the past year the RMT has had 28 days of strikes on this one issue, we’ve seen in excess 20,000 trains cancelled as a result, thousands of journeys disrupted, people’s work and family lives badly impacted and the cost to the regional economy is in excess of £300m.

    Quote Message

Conductors in the RMT union transferred to the new customer service role (On-Board Supervisor) from the beginning of last month and are now operating effectively in that role. Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Rail - the highest industry authority in the land - also says that drivers in sole control of the train is a safe method of operation.

    Quote Message

So the conclusion that most reasonable people will reach is that the RMT is seeking to hang on to its power to cancel trains. We’ve fully implemented our modernisation programme with the driver opening and closing the doors and a second person focused on customer service on our trains. Everyone is sick and tired of the RMT’s strikes and their pointless and intransigent stance needs to stop, and stop now.

Nick Brown, Chief Operating Officer of GTR, Southern’s parent company

Proud dad Kim Morris picked up his son for his graduation photograph 22 years after being snapped holding him as a toddler at his wife's graduation.

James Morris, 23, graduated with a BA (Hons) in Applied Psychology and Criminology from the University of Brighton last week and the family struck the same pose taken when his mother Ruth gained her Masters in Management Development from Salford University.

Ruth, from Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, said: “We are incredibly proud of James, in fact we couldn't be prouder.”

James, who lives in Brighton, conducted interviews at the YMCA for his dissertation and is now working for the YMCA, helping vulnerable people in the community.

Kim wore the same suit and tie for the photograph that he wore when she graduated in 1995, when James was 18-months-old, and he hopes to wear the same outfit at their younger son Alex’s graduation.

He said: “The suit is a little snug these days – it must have shrunk.”
