    Ben Weisz
    Political reporter, BBC Sussex

    The A27

The £250m A27 improvements around Chichester have been cancelled by the Transport Secretary, Chris Grayling.

The so-called Chichester bypass would have improved several bottlenecks around the city, but it had proved controversial, with some residents and councillors calling on Highways England to consider other options.

But now the Transport Secretary has written to Highways England to cancel the scheme.

There will be more on this during the BBC Sussex Breakfast Show with Neil Pringle - you can listen  here .

    Quote Message

We are grateful to everyone who took the time to engage with our consultation last summer on improving the A27 through Chichester. We are obviously disappointed at this decision as the improvement would have brought significant strategic benefits to the region. But any improvement had to be right for Chichester and there was no overall consensus. We will continue to work with partners to monitor the route’s performance and to carry out any short term measures we can to help road users, the local community and the region.

Jim O'Sullivan , Chief Executive, Highways England

  9. Sussex Police 'needs to improve'published at 07:51 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March 2017

    Bob Dale
    BBC Live reporter

Sussex Police "requires improvement", according to government inspectors.

Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary has published its annual report into forces across the country, rating how effective they are in four areas - preventing and investigating crime, protecting and supporting vulnerable people and tackling serious and organised crime.

The Inspectorate warns of the effects of cutbacks and says there's a "national crisis" of a shortage of detectives, leading to "an unconscious form of rationing".

It highlights Sussex as one of the forces which assessed domestic abuse victims over the phone rather than face-to-face.

We've got the feedback, we take it really seriously, the challenge is for people like me, in leading Sussex Police with the chief constable, to make sure that we reconcile the savings that we've got to make with doing the very, very best we can to protect people, and we'll do it.'

Bernie O'Reilly , Deputy Chief Constable, Sussex Police

The families of the 11 men who died in the Shoreham air disaster are gathering before investigators publish their final report.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) will give its conclusions tomorrow.

The report will not apportion blame but is set to look at the cause of the crash and make safety recommendations.

The vintage Hawker hunter jet crashed on to the dual carriageway, destroying several vehicles and bursting into flames.

The families are attending a private briefing on the report on Thursday.
