  11. Southern rail chief's pay hits £495,000 after strike-hit yearpublished at 17:37 British Summer Time 11 April 2017

    Charles Horton

The chief of the Southern rail network was paid £495,000 during a year in which the service was hit by strikes and falling profits.

Charles Horton, chief executive of Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), was paid £478,000 in pay in the last financial year, while also earning £17,000 from Southern Railway Limited, the groups' accounts showed.

It comes during a prolonged battle between Southern and the unions over so-called driver-only operated trains, which has led to disruption for millions of passengers.

Its parent company also suffered a profit slump of more than £15 million in the last year, latest figures showed.

GTR runs Southern, as well as Thameslink, Great Northern and the Gatwick Express routes.

GTR's accounts showed Mr Horton, as the group's highest-paid director, was previously paid £493,000 in 2015.

A spokesman for the group said: "As a matter of policy we do not discuss the remuneration of any of our employees."

  15. Gatwick's 'zero tolerance approach' to passengers who drink too much published at 15:21 British Summer Time 11 April 2017

Gatwick Airport says it has a 'zero tolerance approach' to passengers who drink too much.

It comes after a House of Lords Select Committee found that alcohol is too easily available at some airports and that some people were drinking even before breakfast.

The committee wants restrictions on the sale and consumption of alcohol at airports - which are currently exempt from the 2003 Licensing Act.

    Here's Gatwick's statement.

    Quote Message

The vast majority of our 44 million passengers behave responsibly, but the airport operates a zero tolerance approach for the very small number that cause disruption through the consumption of too much alcohol.

    Quote Message

As a signatory of UK Aviation’s Industry Code of Conduct, Gatwick works closely with airline, retail and security partners to minimise the impact of disruptive passengers and, where possible, to prevent the issue occurring in the first place. Measures taken include intelligence-led security patrols targeting both potential problem flights and also individuals or groups identified as intoxicated, and early intervention measures so staff can report problem passengers to the police at the earliest possible stage, including at check-in or in licensed premises. Frequent public facing awareness campaigns highlighting the consequences of excessive drinking at an airport are also run in conjunction with Gatwick Police.

    Quote Message

Gatwick does not tolerate underage drinking and all outlets selling alcohol operate a strict challenge policy and will refuse to serve alcohol to any customers who are unable to prove their age when challenged.

    Quote Message

Evidence suggests that Gatwick’s policy on disruptive passengers is working with fewer incidents reported in 2016, compared to the previous year. These measures are being improved during 2017 and are kept under constant review to ensure they are as robust as possible.
