Today a coroner recorded verdicts of misadventure and said it wasn't clear whether deploying lifeguards at Camber Sands would have prevented the deaths.

Today’s verdict that the deaths of seven men who drowned in two separate incidents were caused by misadventure is a reminder of how seriously water safety must be taken. We have some of the safest waters in the world, but we need to continue to educate local residents and tourists of the dangers of rip tides and rough waters.

Over the past year I have been in regular contact with the local council about their actions to make Camber Sands a safer place to enjoy during the busy summer months. I welcome that the RNLI will provide lifeguards during this period and that a Beach and Water Safety Group has been established to review and propose changes to the local council. Camber Sands is a picturesque destination for tourists and it is a great place to visit. We must all continue to work together to ensure the safety of our local residents and tourists.

The sister of one of the men who died at Camber last summer has told a press conference the beach wasn't safe.

Earlier a coroner concluded the deaths of seven men there were due to misadventure.

The coroner said it was "not known" whether having lifeguards at the time would have prevented the deaths.

Rother District Council said it has made improvements "year on year" at Camber in response to risks identified. But even with lifeguards, the council said the sea can be unpredictable.

A lawyer for relatives of a group of five men who died at Camber has told a press conference Rother District Council still has questions to answer.

The young men died in August last year, just a month after two other men drowned in the same area.

A coroner has concluded all seven deaths were due to misadventure.

The coroner said it wasn't clear whether deploying lifeguards at Camber Sands would have prevented the deaths.

Rother District Council said it has made improvements "year on year" at Camber in response to risks identified.

Dr Anthony Leonard, the council's executive director of business operations, said lifeguards were now in place working alongside the existing beach patrol team.

  18. Camber Sands: Facts and figurespublished at 15:33 British Summer Time 30 June 2017

    Bob Dale
    BBC Live reporter

    • Camber Sands gets 1.5M visitors a year, with as many as 25,000 on a busy summer day.
    • It's three miles long and stretches half a mile out to sea.
    • Swimmers' safety is controlled with yellow, orange or red flags, although risk assessment's in 2013 and 2016 recommended that Rother District Council should consider lifeguards.
    • On August 24 2016, the day of the tragedy which cost the five men their lives, there was no rip tide, but the current would have been strong, moving at a metre a second, about 2mph, towards the beach.
    • At that speed, a sandbar could be covered in three feet of water inside 15 minutes. The power of the current would have been the equivalent of 2 tonnes of water pushing against someone in the water.
    • There were no fatalities at Camber between 1974 and 2012, but since then nine people have died, including the seven men who were killed last summer.
    • Since then a daily lifeguard patrol of six has been introduced.
