    Sussex's Police and Crime Commissioner has decided not to add the fire service in West Sussex to her remit.

    The government's called for commissioner's to take over responsibility for their local brigades from County Councils.

    Katy Bourne had asked for the feasibility of the idea to be investigated across Sussex, but today a meeting of the West Sussex Fire Authority was told the County Council would stay in charge.

    But the Commissioner does believe £7m can be saved over the next decade, by working more closely together.

    Brighton and Hove Albion have agreed a new contract with Finnish international goalkeeper Niki Maenpaa.

    The 32-year-old has put pen to paper on a new one-year contract with the club, extending his stay until June 2018.

    Maenpaa joined Albion from Dutch side VVV-Venlo in 2015, and he has made nine cup appearances and one Championship start for the club over the past two seasons.

    Brighton and Hove City Council is missing its targets in almost two thirds of the things it's trying to do, according to a report, external.

    Residents were surveyed to find out what it's like to live in the city and one in five said they don't think they have enough money to pay their rent, keep their house warm or to buy enough food.

    Figures also show a growing proportion of children are living in poverty.

    And only 65 affordable homes were built last year - against a target of 236.

  10. RMT announce further strike action in Southern Rail disputepublished at 15:19 British Summer Time 14 July 2017

    Rail union RMT has come out in support of the Aslef union strike on Southern Rail.

    The RMT told its own driver members not to book in for any shifts on Tuesday 1, Wednesday 2 and Friday 4 August - the same days as Aslef announced it would be striking.

    The strike is part of the on-going dispute in defence of the role of the guard.

    The unions want the guarantee of a second safety-critical member of staff on Southern services.

    Mick Cash, RMT General Secretary, said: “Yet again today RMT is forced to send Southern Rail a clear message that we will not allow them to strip the railway of a safety critical second member of staff on these vital rail services."

    Flats on the 17th floor of a Brighton tower block were evacuated when a fire broke out just after 09:00 BST.

    One person was treated for the effects of breathing in smoke, after the blaze at the 24-storey Sussex Heights, which is thought to have been caused by an electrical item.

    Eastbourne’s Johanna Konta's hopes of reaching the Wimbledon final ended with a straight-set defeat by Venus Williams.

    The five-time champion American 10th seed won 6-4 6-2 in 73 minutes, making it to her first Wimbledon final since 2009.

    Sixth seed Konta, had hoped to become the first British woman in a Wimbledon final for 40 years. However, she will break into the top five for the first time in the next rankings.

    In a tight contest, Williams worked her way to victory with smarter serving and more effective returns.

    The 37-year-old American is the oldest Grand Slam singles finalist since Martina Navratilova finished runner-up at Wimbledon in 1994.

    "I've played a lot of finals here. One more win will be amazing. It won't be a given but I'll give it my all,” she told BBC Sport.

    "The crowd were very nice to me. The crowd were so fair, I know they love Jo."
