The Fogspike and cold cut firefighting system are both designed to create a hole in the outside of a building and spray a water mist inside rapidly bring the temperature of the fire down.

  8. Medway Council: special educational needs transport delaypublished at 20:14 British Summer Time 1 August 2018

    Dean Kilpatrick
    Local Democracy Reporter

Medway Council has been accused of running behind schedule in implementing changes to the way it provides home-to-school transport for pupils with special educational needs.

Cabinet members are due to discuss the procurement process for the revised service at its meeting on 4 September - the same week pupils return to school from the summer break.

Speaking last night councillor Dorte Gilry (Lab) said: "I'm sure you've all had a letter from Medway Parents and Carers Forum about their concerns about the state of play. There's a problem - it's the summer holidays and they will go into the new academic year with nothing secure.

"I'm a bit concerned that nothing concrete has happened for the parents since cabinet made the decision in April."

Changes include the introduction of yearly reviews, parents being considered for a cash allowance to make their own arrangements, and the use of pick-up and drop-off points.

The authority says the old policy lacked flexibility and failed to encourage independence, while the modifications will also save the council £200,000 in 2018/19.

Ian Sutherland, Medway Council's director of children and adults services, told the council's scrutiny committee he was happy to discuss any concerns parents and carers might have ahead of the new school year.

He added: "We hadn't anticipated the number of trips and slips that we've had along the way.

"I can assure you that we're keen to engage with the Medway Parents and Carers Forum, and parents individually, to try and resolve any of these issues - and we're very mindful of the tight time schedule."

  11. Complaints about Medway's children's services fallpublished at 18:18 British Summer Time 1 August 2018

    Dean Kilpatrick
    Local Democracy Reporter

Complaints about Medway Council's children's services department have fallen by nearly 25% year-on-year, new figures have revealed.

The authority recorded 92 new grievances in 2017-18 - compared to 120 in 2016-17 - with the main issues raised including the behaviour of staff, lack of communication, and difference of opinions.

Just 12 were made by children or care leavers themselves, while one person lodged five separate complaints to the council.

Only 30% of stage one complaints - which are considered by staff at the point of service delivery - were upheld.

  12. Hospital blanket scheme up for awardpublished at 17:24 British Summer Time 1 August 2018

    Sarah Booker-Lewis
    Local Democracy Reporter

A life-saving blanket scheme in a Brighton hospital has been shortlisted for a national award.

Ward manager Karen Lee gave elderly patients at the Royal Sussex County Hospital different coloured blankets with various patterns.

They helped the pensioners, some with dementia, to find their way back to bed more easily, leading to fewer falls on the busy medical ward.

Ms Lee, who runs Jowers Ward in the Barry Building in Eastern Road, said that the scheme was in the running for the Nursing Times safety award.

Her original idea was aimed at making the ward more homely after she moved there six years ago.

The aircraft was seen at about 11:30 BST on Tuesday and the men were arrested when it landed at Rochester Airport, Kent Police said.

  17. Criticism over lack of police fundingpublished at 15:45 British Summer Time 1 August 2018

    Caitlin Webb
    Local Democracy Reporter

The Kent police and crime commissioner has criticised the government for increasing funding to the NHS and not the police.

This comes months after Prime Minister Theresa May promised a £20 billion increase for the health service every year until 2023 through a "Brexit dividend", while cuts to the police force budget continue.

All UK forces have seen cuts to grants from central government since 2010.

Residents in Kent and Medway are paying more this year towards the cost of the force, as council tax has increased by 3.3%.

At the Kent and Medway police and crime panel, Matthew Scott said: "Now the NHS has got its 'Brexit Dividend' and masses of cash will be sloshing around the NHS in the coming years, I'm sure a lot of us would have liked to have seen it come our way.

"The NHS has already had an increase in their budget of more than the entirety of the policing budget and they are about to get, by the time this increase goes through (between 2010 and 2023), three times the police budget.

"What we need to do is to continue to place the pressure on NHS commissioners, who are responsible for providing those services, to tailor it to what Kent Police need and Kent County Council and Medway Council need."
