An application to build four detached houses in the Shipley countryside has been refused.
Plans for the homes, which were designed to reflect a farmhouse, coach house, converted stable and chauffeur's cottage, were put before Horsham District Council's planning committee south on 18 September.
The recommendation from planning officers was for members to refuse the application on the grounds that it was outside the built-up area boundary, and the site had not been allocated for development.
Quote MessageThis would be a very urban development in the countryside. It would open the floodgates to many other applications."
Kate Rowbottom (Con, Billingshurst and Shipley), Horsham District Council
The meeting also saw members approve plans for a three-bedroom house in Concorde Close, Storrington.
An application was also approved to turn land in Fryern Road, Storrington, over to private equestrian use.

Commuters at Brighton station have been reacting after a report said "no-one took charge" during the timetable chaos that caused severe disruption on Britain's railways in May.
The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) blamed a lack of "responsibility and accountability" and said passengers were "badly treated".
It said track manager Network Rail, two train operators and the Department for Transport "had all made mistakes".
It came as the government promised a major review of Britain's railways.
The upgrade - which involved changes to 46% of train times - mainly affected Govia Thameslink (GTR) routes into London and Northern Trains in the north west of England. Read the full story here.
Quote MessageI've been late numerous times, nearly everyday sometimes up to about an hour. I usually get into work for 9 sometimes, on one occasion I didn't get in until 11, so it has been quite detrimental to my sort of daily schedule. I just think it's ridiculous. I don't understand why nobody could have made it smoother, or given us an idea of how bad it actually was going to be, otherwise I would have taken action to get to work. For some people they ended up losing jobs over it."
Alex Dowd, Commuter
Quote MessageIt's an everyday matter that's pretty much something that we come to accept. I think there's not been the right sort of management. It's often the case of Thameslink trains being delayed, since the new timetable came out in May, there's often been the case of delays or cancellations. I think they've got the idea of what they are trying to achieve for us, but there's quite a few flaws that need correcting to have it spot on in every detail."

New council houses could be heading for Hollingbury.
Plans for two three-bedroom and two two-bedroom homes can be put forward for the derelict site in Rotherfield Crescent after Brighton and Hove City Council Housing and New Homes Committee approved the scheme.
In November 2017, councillors sent the proposals back to officers saying the plans were too expensive as it cost £1.2 million.
Since then a redesign has resulted in £178,000 worth of savings for the project.
The total cost for each of the four houses now works out at £236,000.
The explanation was the project was part of a design competition. Councillors were asked to decide the options for rental and opted for a proposal put forward as an amendment by Green councillor David Gibson.
After working with housing officers, an amendment was put through and approved by councillors to offer the three bedroom homes at 37.5% living wage rent and the two-bedroom at 27.5% living wage rent.
This would put the rent for the two-bedroom home as £118.39 a week and the three bedroom at £188.34 a week.
