Police investigating a report of a possible child abduction in Brighton confirmed the little girl was with her father.
The force received a report of a man picking up a child and walking away.
The three-year-old had simply been "reluctant to go home".
The force said it was "clear that the person who first called police in the afternoon had misinterpreted what they saw but was acting in perfectly good faith".

Tens of thousands of people have lined the streets for the annual bonfire parade in Lewes.
The town holds one of Britain's biggest Bonfire Night events with more than 30 different processions.
Police investigating a report of a possible child abduction outside Churchill Square in Brighton have released a CCTV image of a man and child in the hope relatives or friends may help clear up what happened.
Wide-spread searches of the area took place, and the police helicopter was scrambled after Sussex Police received a report a man may have picked up a small child and walked off.
But the force said it has received no reports of children going missing and they suggested the report may have been an “innocent mistake” reported in good faith.
The incident involves concern about a white man, believed to be aged around 70 years old and wearing a green coat, who was interacting with a small child.
The child was described as a white girl, aged between three and five years old, wearing a pink coat and blonde hair.
Superintendent James Collis said: "From all our inquiries, we think the man and child in this image may be the ones our original caller is referring to.
"Active inquiries are continuing but we are also considering the possibility that the man and child are family members or at least known to each other, and that the caller may have misinterpreted what they saw but was nevertheless acting in perfectly good faith.
"If you are that man, or a family member or friend who has information about this incident, please get in touch with us as soon as possible by ringing 101 quoting Operation Boxworth, so that we can meet you and confirm that all is well with you and the child.
"And if anyone else recognises these people we also ask them to call us right away."

The operator of a teacup ride which came loose and "spun into a crowd" at a fireworks display at Leeds Castle in Kent was in possession of valid safety and insurance certificates, organisers have said.
Leeds Castle said the external contractor had "an excellent safety record" and had worked at castle events for many years without incident.
Two teenagers on the ride and a further two children who were watching suffered minor injuries and shock when the cup broke away from its platform at about 17:15 GMT on Saturday.
They were treated by the on-site event paramedics within two to three minutes of the incident being reported, a castle spokesman said.
Quote MessageThis particular incident is very much regretted and all who work at Leeds Castle are shocked that this can have happened during what otherwise was an event enjoyed by 8,500 people.

The management of the Bexhill Colonnade project is to be the subject of a public review, after reports a council-run restaurant lost more than £56,000 in ten weeks.
Rother District Council's Conservative cabinet today considered a report updating members on a project to refurbish the Grade II-listed seafront landmark, creating four retail units and a restaurant.
The report revealed the council-run restaurant had lost £56,785 between July 21 and the end of September, prompting calls for a “detailed review” from Liberal Democrat councillors Kathryn Field and Kevin Dixon.
The losses were due to the cost of “fitting out” the restaurant, the council said.
Lord Ampthill, cabinet member for finance, requested that the council's overview and scrutiny committee review the project.
He said: “The trouble with the Colonnade is that we were not attracting people to operate the facility. We did not want it to be left unattended during the summer months, and the trouble was it was not fitted out.
“These costs should be looked at as an investment in some ways.”
The council has now found a tenant to operate the restaurant.
Council leader Carl Maynard said: “It will see a yearly income of around £35,000. That is the net benefit for this council. That is a return of 10%.”
Sussex Police have warned of fraudsters using online dating sites.
Police said there were 149 victims of so-called “romance fraud” in the county in one year, with a total of £2.2m lost.
Sussex Police shared a video, created by their colleagues at the Metropolitan Police, which advised users of dating websites and apps to “check the stories people tell you by doing a few simple internet searches”.
It warned: “Not everyone’s looking for love. Fraudsters set up fake profiles. The pictures aren’t them and their life stories aren’t real.
“They just want your money, not your love.”
Victims have an average age of 62, with 57% living alone, Sussex Police said.
PC Bernadette Lawrie of Sussex Police said it was “one of the most despicable crimes we see”, adding: “The victims can be among the most challenging to deal with as they are often in denial that the fraudster they are in contact with is not genuine - until it is too late.
“Victims are targeted and exploited when they are at their most vulnerable and the complex tactics and deceitful tales that lure the victims into parting with such huge sums of money are quite astonishing.
"One of the most difficult conversations we have is telling a victim that not only will they not see their money come back but that the person they believe they are in a relationship with and are looking forward to a future with, is in fact a criminal posing under a false identity.”
The Health and Safety Executive is carrying out a "thorough investigation" after eight children were hurt.
