  4. 'We need a technical solution', says airspace security expertpublished at 09:08 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2018

Martin Lanni is CEO of Quantum Aviation Ltd, a specialist airspace security company.

"The ripple of this disruption goes far beyond Gatwick - it's all the departure airports across the world, airports that flights have been diverted to and so on.

"They're doing absolutely the right thing to have suspended operations, obviously safety is paramount, but prevention is better than cure, I'm sure anyone sitting on a plane now would agree.

"What can you do in future to prevent this from happening? To be honest it requires some money being spent on a technical solution, which might include a level of radar, camera detection, radio frequency detection and jamming. There are plans to introduce registration for drone purchases in future but that is the future and obviously won't help today."

"We are in close contact with Gatwick Airport as they work with police to safely resolve the situation as quickly as possible."

In May, the government amended the Air Navigation Order 2016 to make it illegal to fly drones above 400 feet and within 1km of an airport boundary.

This came into effect in July.

"We know a lot of drones will be under people's Christmas trees and we implore them to ensure they're aware of the rules and fly their drones in a safe and sensible manner."
