  1. SSI bosses pledge to work with governmentpublished at 10:35

    A statement from SSI says: "We will continue to work with various stakeholders, including Government with the objective of restarting operations at Teesside at some point in the future. 

    "Consultation with the Trade Unions and Employee Representatives will commence as soon as possible."

  2. Redcar steel plant mothballed 'due to poor trading'published at 10:33

    SSI says the decision to mothball the Redcar plant is due to "a continuing background of poor steel trading conditions across the globe".

    The company says about 1,700 jobs will be lost.

    We've got a statement from SSI confirming that the Redcar plant is being mothballed.

    However it says the Redcar Coke Ovens and the Power Station will continue to operate.

    The Press Association is reporting that sources say iron and steelmaking at the Redcar steel plant is to be mothballed, with the loss of up to 1,700 jobs.

  5. Sunderland fan dies in Manchester crashpublished at 10:15

    A Sunderland fan died in hospital after he was hit by a car while on his way to see his team play in Manchester.

    Arthur Eade suffered head injuries when he was hit by a Nissan Qashqai in Trafford Park on Saturday.

    The family of the 68-year-old said football was his "passion" and he had travelled to the game with his son and grandson.

  7. Man flown to hospital with serious injuries after being hit by vehiclepublished at 09:34

    A 19-year-old man was flown to the hospital after he was hit by a vehicle in Egglescliffe.

    He suffered critical head, chest and facial injuries yesterday afternoon.

    He was given a general anaesthetic by the crew of the Great North Air Ambulance and then flown to the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

    There was a spectacular sight in the sky in the early hours of this morning when a lunar eclipse coincided with the so-called supermoon.

    The moon turned red during the event and many people in the North East stayed up to catch the phenomenon on film.

    Diego Fabbrini slotted in Boro's third after Leeds' Mirco Antenucci saw an effort ruled out for offside.

  10. Northumberland A1 roadworks warningpublished at 08:49

    Motorists are being warned they face nightly disruption while resurfacing work is carried out on the A1 in Northumberland

    Highways England workers will start work later on a one-mile stretch of the road between Morpeth and Alnwick. 

    The road near Felton will be reduced to a single carriageway and traffic lights in place while work is carried out between 18:00 and 06:00.

    Scores of people attempted to set a new world record for the biggest ever skinny dip at Druridge Bay in Northumberland.

    Crowds of naked people ran into the sea at sunrise yesterday to try and break the record for the most people taking part, as well as raise money for mental health charity Mind and the National Trust.     

  13. Traffic delays on Cramlington Spine Roadpublished at 08:10

    An accident on the A189 is causing problems in Cramlington.

    The southbound carriageway is down to one lane between the A1061 and the B1505 junctions, resulting in queuing traffic and delays.
