  1. Tim Krul 'devastated' after knee injurypublished at 09:35

    After being ruled out for the rest of the serason with a knee injury, Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul posted on Twitter: , external "I'm devastated the scan has confirmed my biggest fear . . . My recovery and hard work starts now to fully recover."

    Krul has played all eight Premier League games this season for Newcastle, who are bottom of the table and without a win.

    Back-up goalkeeper Freddie Woodman has been recalled from a loan spell at League Two club Crawley Town.

  2. Rugby World Cup clashes boost region by £43mpublished at 09:15

    The Rugby World Cup has generated about £43m for Newcastle's economy, tourism bosses say.

    Three games were held at Newcastle United's St James' Park and a dedicated Fanzone was created at Science Central.

    NewcastleGateshead Initiative said hosting the event had brought a windfall to the city and hotel occupancy reached 99% on match days.

    Chief executive Sarah Stewart said the "memorable event" had been a "huge success" for the region.

  3. 'Desperate' 999 call from woman in seapublished at 08:36

    Rescuers managed to save a woman from the sea off the coast in Teesside after she made a "desperate" call from the water.

    RNLI lifeboats were scrambled at 23:30 last night after the woman's 999 call from her mobile. 

    Rescuers lost contact with her, but she was eventually found conscious on the beach at Cliffe House near Markse, the UK Coastguard said.

  4. Travel: Delays after A66 closedpublished at 08:25

    The A66 in South Bank is closed and there's queuing traffic eastbound between Cargo Fleet Interchange and Asda traffic lights because of an accident.  

    One lane is closed and there's queuing traffic on the A1(M) northbound between J61, A177 (Bowburn) and J62, A690 (Carrville) because of another accident.

  5. Local MP sorry for 'Chinese wife' tweetpublished at 08:14

    A Labour MP has apologised after making comments about Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt's Chinese wife.

    Former shadow minister Helen Goodman, MP for Bishop Auckland, had tweeted: "If China is so great, why did @Jeremy_Hunt's wife come to England?" She has since deleted it.

    It comes after Mr Hunt said the UK had to become as hard working as Asia. 

     The Labour Party said the tweet did not represent its views and that Ms Goodman would be reminded of her responsibilities.

  6. Weather: Chilly, cloudy day with patchy rainpublished at 08:05

    Early fog patches will clear quickly, to leave a chilly, cloudy day with sporadic rain throughout the day.

     It will become brighter into the afternoon, but with the risk of an isolated shower, most likely around Berwick. 

    Despite the chill, temperatures will nudge towards 12C (54F) at times.
