    Breaking

    A major incident has now been declared across Cumbria because of the severe weather.

    Many of Cumbria’s roads are blocked or impassable due to flooding and widespread surface water, Cumbria Police said. 

    In particular roads around Keswick and Kendal are blocked and it advised people not to travel in or out of those areas.

    The football match between Team Northumbria and Northallerton has now been called off according to the Northern League, external.

    The match was one of only four in the leage's Division Two which was going to go ahead.

    But now safety concerns over heavy wind have led to the match's cancellation.

  5. Seventeen severe weather warnings across North East & Cumbriapublished at 15:28

    An update on the situation so far as Storm Desmond cause disruption across the North East and Cumbria:

    The Environment Agency has issued 17 severe weather warnings - 15 in Cumbria and two in Northumberland at Corbridge, external.

    That means severe flooding and danger to life.

    Among the areas badly affected by flooding are Appleby, Keswick, Kendal and Corbridge.

  9. Bridge closed and homes flooded in Corbridgepublished at 14:56

    More than 60 homes are expected to be affected by flooding in Corbridge according to the Environment Agency.

    Resident Jim Crawford said for some it is the second time in two weeks they have been flooded.

    He sent some pictures to show the current situation.

  10. Homes evacuated in Keswickpublished at 14:49

    Cumbria Police and the Mountain Rescue Team are currently helping residents in some areas of Keswick to evacuate their homes and get to the local reception centre.

    Residents in HighHill Road, Elliot Road, and Crossthwaite Road are being advised to evacuate and attend the reception centre at St Herbert’s School in Keswick. 

    A police spokesman said: "We would urge members of the public to check vulnerable family members, friends and neighbours in the area who may need assistance. 

    "If you decide to self-evacuate, please inform your family and friends where you are going, and that you are safe, to avoid concerned relatives contacting emergency services."  

    The spokesman also said all road surrounding Keswick are blocked or badly affected by large areas of surface water and are advising people not to travel unless absolutely necessary.

  11. Cumbria 'under siege' from the weatherpublished at 14:43

    Cumbria Fire Service group manager Dave Edgar makes an "impassioned plea" for people to avoid travelling in South Lakes - he says the service is stretched.

    The fire service is having to send crews "back and forth" to rescue drivers who've gone through floodwater, making it hard to prioritise incidents.

    He says the service has been called to hundreds of incidents, and the county is "under siege from the weather".

  15. Winds damage Redcar Beaconpublished at 14:15

    Part of the beach at Redcar was closed this morning after pieces of the vertical pier were blown off.

    CCTV operators saw several large piece of paneling falling off the Beacon on to the beach at about 09:20.

    A spokesman for Cleveland Police said the beach was closed around the Beacon to prevent any injuries.

    Redcar and Cleveland Council were working to make the building safe.
