    A new stage version of Get Carter opens tonight in Newcastle. 

    The classic British crime drama, which is set in the North East, is being performed at Northern Stage. 

    The story was made famous by the 1971 film starring Michael Caine (pictured) and was filmed using locations around Tyneside.

    Adam Johnson was sacked by Sunderland last night after pleading guilty to one count of sexual activity with a child and one charge of grooming.

    The 28-year-old will stand trial today on two further counts of sexual activity with a girl aged under 16, which he denies.  

    Sportswear firm Adidas has cancelled its contract with the midfielder.  

    The trial is to be held at Bradford Crown Court and is expected to last two weeks.
