It is the year of the Monkey and revellers in Newcastle's Stowell Street were treated to a traditional Dragon and Lion dance to ward off bad spirits and bring good luck.
There were also kung-fu demonstrations, rides, food and craft stalls, as well as a firework display.
The celebrations will continue for another week.
An 18m (60ft) tall high ropes and zip wire course on the banks of the River Tees was officially opened over the weekend.
Air Trail Tees Barrage, which has been built beside a white water course, features 38 challenges to tackle including a 10m high climbing wall.
The attraction will be run by Tees Active, which runs leisure facilities and activities across the borough on behalf Stockton Council.
The council say they hope the course will bring 25,000 visitors a year.

Cold with wintry showers, sunny spells, and a chilly northwesterly wind.
The showers are likely to die out inland after midday, becoming mainly sunny, with winds also decreasing.

The roads are icy, and there have been a number of accidents this morning.
The A69 Northumberland - A69 Ratcliffe Road in Haydon Bridge is closed and there is very slow traffic eastbound at the B6319 North Bank junction, because of an accident involving three vehicles.
On the A1 northbounds in County Durham there is a lane closed and there's stop-start traffic between J61, A177 (Bowburn) and J62, A690 (Carrville), because of a multi-vehicle accident.
There's also queuing traffic on the A1 southbound between J63, A167 (Chester-le-Street) and J62, A690 (Carrville).
