    He adds that the schoolgirl "now suffers night terrors" and cannot sleep.

    Footballer Adam Johnson groomed a schoolgirl for sexual activity, the judge says.

    Judge Jonathan Rose, sentencing, said the winger offered a signed shirt to the girl and met her while it was dark in a bid to "gain her confidence".  

    He said: "You were testing the waters, to see how far you could go ... grooming her for sexual activity."

    The NSPCC letter, addressed to FA chairman Greg Dyke, says: "The NSPCC’s concern lies not in the behaviour of a single individual – although that is itself horrifying – but in the approach taken by Sunderland Football Club when confronted with a serious child protection issue.

    "We are worried this could be a cultural problem within football as a whole and find it concerning clubs may not see incidents such as these as a child protection issue."

    Sunderland AFC said they do not wish to comment.

    The FA said: "The FA and the NSPCC have a long standing relationship through the Child Protection in Sport Unit. We championed their recognition by Uefa which resulted in them receiving €1m to continue their important work."

    The NSPCC has voiced concerns over the "cultural problem with football" following the Adam Johnson trial.

    The former Sunderland and England footballer was found guilty of a child sex charge earlier this month.

    NSPCC chief executive Peter Wanless has written to the chairman of the Football Association, saying the case "has pulled into sharp focus the way child protection and safeguarding is considered by some football clubs".

    His defence team added the victim's "severe psychological harm" was result of media coverage and social media activity.

    Adam Johnson has shown "genuine remorse" for grooming and sexual activity with a child, a psychiatrist says.

    Dr Philip Hopley was called by Johnson's defence team in mitigation.

    He said he believed that as a professional footballer he developed his confidence and self-esteem very quickly and this, combined with the availability of willing women, led to his "compulsive sexual behaviour".

    The doctor said he found no evidence in Johnson of an attraction to pre-pubescent children or "sexual perversion".
