  6. Boulby mine gas blow 'unprecedented'published at 17:08 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

There will be a "full and detailed" investigation following the death of a man at Boulby Potash mine this morning, the site's owner said.

John Anderson, from Easington, died at Boulby mine in East Cleveland following a 'gas blow'- a sudden release of a small amount of gas at exceedingly high pressure which also displaces mineral.

ICL UK says it is fully cooperating with Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Mines, who are at the site.

The company's safety manager Simon Hunter said there was no suggestion that procedures were not being followed and he described the event as "unprecedented".

The site, which has operated for 40 years, announced significant job losses last year.

"When we looked at the restructure we did it in a very controlled way," Mr Hunter said.

  10. Man who died at Boulby mine was long-serving workerpublished at 15:37 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

    Ian Reeve
    BBC Look North

John Anderson, who died at Boulby Mine early this morning, was from Easington and is believed to have worked at the mine for 35 years.

I understand that the powerful gas blow-out which killed Mr Anderson came as a consequence of the release of natural-gas pockets found in the rock underground.

To add some background to this event, in 2007 there was another fatality here at Boulby Potash, when a 24 year old miner was killed by a rockfall, and since 2012 the mine has reportedly been issued with 11 notices of breaches of health and safety procedures.

I also spoke to local MP Tom Blenkinsop, who's told me he wants to be reassured that recent redundancies here haven't had an impact on safe working.
