  5. Shelvey charged with misconduct over comments to Wolves playerpublished at 17:42 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2016

    Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has been charged by the FA with misconduct over the Magpie's game against Wolves in September., external

    It is alleged he used abusive and/or insulting words towards an opponent in the 87th minute.

    This has been classed as an "aggravated breach" as it allegedly included reference to ethnic origin and/or race and/or nationality. 

    The player has until 16 November to respond.

    A home-made bomb was placed under a car in Washington last night, police say.

    A member of the public heard a loud bang in Compton Court in Oxclose at 23:20 and police found the explosive had been placed under the rear of the vehicle.

    The car was damaged and bomb disposal teams attended today to ensure the device was safe. 

    Supt Brad Howe said: "We do believe this may have been a targeted incident and at this time, we haven't received any further reports. 

    "We believe this to be a crude, home-made improvised device, which has caused only minimal damage to the vehicle, however we are taking this very seriously and would appeal to anyone with any information to contact police."

    The region needs "a Poldark of the North" to give a boost to tourism similar to that gained by Cornwall after the BBC1 series was broadcast, the Northern Powerhouse minister Andrew Percy says.

    The minister said: "Poldark has really put Cornwall on the map, people want to go and see where Poldark was filmed, we've got fantastic scenery, in Yorkshire and Lancashire and Cumbria, Northumberland, so let's have an equivalent."

    The nearest equivalent might be Rogues Herries, a character created by Hugh Walpole, external, who wrote four novels about the faithless husband and general ne'er do well of Borrowdale. 

    It made a now lost BBC TV series in 1960, and a play at the Theatre by the Lake in Keswick three years ago.

    The former partner of Adam Johnson's sister has been jailed for 16 weeks for harassing the disgraced ex-Sunderland footballer's child sex victim in a series of Facebook posts. 

     Steven Knox, 30, of Bradford Avenue, Town End Farm, Sunderland, caused the 15-year-old alarm or distress by posting photos of her online and urging others to share them after Johnson was convicted of sexual activity with the child. 

     Knox, who is unemployed, ignored a harassment warning by the police and continued to post about the girl, who as the victim of a sex offence was entitled to life-long anonymity. 

     Knox, who has a child with Johnson's sister Faye, appeared at Peterlee Magistrates' Court to admit the single harassment charge.

    Jeremain Lens scored a free-kick for Fenerbahce against Manchester United in the Europa League last week, reminding many of us he is in fact a Sunderland player.

    The midfielder, 28, is on a season-long loan at the Turkish club but isn't looking to move back to Wearside.

    "If Fenerbahce want me, I want to stay. 

    "I am not happy at Sunderland. I have friends within this (Fenerbahce) team, my relationships with my team-mates are excellent."

    Northumbria Police has confirmed it is carrying out investigations at the request of the Metropolitan Police after numerous errors were made in a Scotland Yard investigation into paedophile allegations against VIPs.

    Five officers have been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission following the review.

    The Met Police commissioner accepted "accountability for these failures" and apologised to those involved.

    The £2.5m investigation was launched after claims that boys had been sexually abused by public figures more than 30 years ago - but it closed in March without a single arrest.

    An MP describes finding a recording device while on a visit to the headquarters of Sports Direct, while a delegation was checking on employment conditions.

    Business Select Committee member Anna Turley said the camera, left by a member of staff delivering sandwiches, was "the least subtle thing I've ever seen", but Mike Ashley's firm has since denied any link to the recording device.

    The Labour MP for Redcar spoke to Daily Politics presenter Jo Coburn about the visit to the warehouse in Derbyshire.

  16. Snowdogs prepared for final farewellpublished at 14:04 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2016

    All 61 individually decorated Snowdog sculptures will go on show one final time in December.

    The Farewell Weekend, from 2 to 4 December, will be held at Gateshead International Stadium.

    The Snowdogs, which appeared all over the Tyne and Wear area, were made to raise funds for the children’s service at St Oswald’s Hospice, Gosforth.

    The Snowdogs will then be sold at auction on 6 December at the Sage Gateshead.

  17. Couple injured in Whitley Bay attackpublished at 13:31 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2016

    A couple suffered head and facial injuries during an assault in Whitley Bay.

    The 43-year-old man and 32-year-old woman were walking in the street when they were assaulted by two men - one of whom was on a bicycle - who made off towards Whitley Bay Metro Station.

    The woman is in a critical but stable condition at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary. The man is also receiving hospital treatment and is stable.

    A 35-year-old man has been arrested.

    Police are appealing for witnesses and are treating it as an "isolated incident".

  18. Man trapped under wall at Beamishpublished at 13:15 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2016

    A man had to be rescued after becoming trapped under a brick wall at Beamish.

    The man in his 50s was treated for a possible fractured pelvis by the Great North Air Ambulance Service at about 11:00 yesterday.

    The GNAAS trauma team worked alongside the fire service to free the man, who was later flown to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary where he arrived in a stable condition.
