  3. Youngsters design new fleet of police carspublished at 16:18 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2021

A class of four and five-year-olds from Washington have been building a new fleet of police cars as part of their home-schooling.

The youngsters from George Washington School were doing a project on transport and were inspired by PC Ben Waites from Northumbria Police who sent a video of the inside of a patrol car.

Some of the children's cars have impressive details.

  4. Extra cash to tackle Middlesbrough potholespublished at 16:17 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2021

    Local Democracy Reporting Service
    Alex Metcalfe

Extra money will be spent repairing Middlesbrough’s roads this year – months on from a “pothole purge” across the town.

More than 26,000 holes were fixed by council teams to try to fill a mass of problems across the town over 20 weeks last year.

The town-wide blitz saw more than 1,400 tonnes of asphalt laid across the borough, but many main roads and A-roads weren't included.

Last week, Middlesbrough Mayor Andy Preston unveiled an extra £750,000 would go towards fixing roads from April – something he said was “over and above the normal budget”.

Mr Preston said: “Everyone’s fed up with the potholes on our roads. Because of this people are frustrated with me and the council."

The council received £1.1m from the Department for Transport’s “pothole fund” this year.

  6. Fears grow that Rothbury flood overflow could burstpublished at 14:08 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2021

A bank holding a floodwater overflow lake is at risk of failing, the Environment Agency fears.

Earlier this month the River Coquet split in two after heavy rainfall, with part of the river merging into Caistron Lakes near Rothbury.

The Environment Agency said Caistron Lakes is holding anywhere between 40 and 200 Olympic sized swimming pools of water (100,000 to 500,000 cubic metres) and the aggregate bank holding it has eroded.

If the bank fails the water could flood agricultural and low lying land, public roads and the Cow Haugh car park at Rothbury riverside.

The agency is working with Northumberland County Council, Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service and Northumbria Police to reduce the risk to the local area.

We’ve been closely monitoring the River Coquet over recent years and have developed a robust incident response plan to minimise the impact on the community and environment.

    Quote Message

We’re assessing the current situation and looking at options to ensure a gradual release of the stored water."

    Andrew Turner, Environment Agency

Caistron Lakes were created many years ago when the River Coquet overtopped into a sand and gravel extraction site.

The new breach will ultimately create a new channel for the River Coquet.

  9. Lost Voice Guy appeals for North East voicepublished at 10:09 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2021

Britain's Got Talent winner Lee Ridley, who performs as Lost Voice Guy, is looking for a North East man to donate his voice.

The comedian has cerebral palsy and uses an electronic device to communicate.

He is trying to find someone to record their voice so he can use it on the device.

He said: "To be honest there's nothing wrong with my current voice except from the fact it sounds very posh.

"I should be reading the shipping forecast on Radio 4 and it isn't exactly the voice I would've had if I hadn't been disabled."

He wants to sound like his family, who are from Consett, in County Durham, so has started a competition which would see the owner of the winning accent spending about eight hours in a recording studio.

    Lost Voice Guy, Lee Ridley

Lee said: "I always wanted a Geordie accent but it isn't as simple as that because of the new technology involved and it costs quite a lot to create one and it's quite a long process.

"When a company approached me offering to make me a Geordie accent for my communication device, I jumped at the opportunity."

Anyone interested needs to record themselves reading a paragraph from his new book and send it to him. More details are on his website., external

The deadline for views on a consultation which could see dogs banned on two of Sunderland's popular beaches for five months of the year is the end of today.

Sunderland City Council is reviewing its city wide public spaces protection order and has asked for views on the plan which would either see dogs barred from Seaburn and Roker beaches between 09:00 and 18:00, or be allowed on the beach but only on a lead.

Both proposed rules would be in force from May to the end of September.
