All but one of the councils in the BBC Tees region have a seen a rise in the number of children being taken into care over the last five years, figures show.

Hartlepool and Redcar and Cleveland have seen the biggest increases, with numbers going up by more than a third.

Both authorities are forecasting deficits, caused largely by the costs of looked-after children.

Craig Hannaway from Redcar and Cleveland Council says it's a national problem exasperated by local factors.

He added: "I think obviously a large factor, like the SSI closure, will produce a lot of family difficulties.

"Another factor is we have a higher rate of school exclusions particularly from our academies."
