    A Redcar charity which helps support survivors of domestic and sexual abuse has been awarded National Lottery funding from Sport England.

    EVA Women’s Aid, external has been awarded £36,200 by Sport England for its new project which helps local people on a low income improve their health and mental wellbeing through sport and activity.

    Richinda Taylor, CEO at EVA Women’s Aid, said: “We are delighted that Sport England have chosen our project to be funded.

    "This will greatly enhance our provision at EVA by adding an exciting new dimension to our many services.”

    EVA Women’s Aid is one of 34 projects to receive a share of more than £3.36m in this latest round of Sport England funding specifically aimed helping people on a low income get active.

    Dutch firm Heerema has announced it's trying to sell it Hartlepool Fabrication yard, which employs 90 people.

    It's all part of a restructuring of the Heerema Fabrication Group.

    A spokesman for the firm has told BBC Tees there are no job losses planned at the site but it needs to sell the yard before its current project ends in the middle of next year.

    Newcastle Crown Court has heard evidence from a man who says he was sexually assaulted by a football coach when he was a boy.

    He said he was regularly abused by John Marshall over a period of 18 months to two years when he was 11 or 12 years old.

    He gave evidence about 20-30 assaults he allegedly endured from the coach in his car, in the gym and outside in parks.

    He said Marshall had shown an interest in him and had suggested extra coaching lessons, to develop his skills and talent as a footballer.

    He said he had felt flattered by the attention, and also described the guilt and shame he felt for many years afterwards.

    71-year-old Marshall, from North Tyneside, faces eleven charges involving five boys dating back to the late 70’s and early 1980’s.

    Marshall has been declared not fit to stand trial.Although the case is being heard in front of a jury, they will be deciding in his absence whether he did the acts he’s been charged with, rather than whether or not he is guilty.

    The trial is expected to conclude on Thursday.

    Robbie Savage, Danny Murphy and Andrew Cole are among more than a dozen former footballers suing an asset management firm over payments to agents.

    The High Court heard evidence that the 16 players asked their agents to recommend a financial adviser.

    They were put in touch with Formation Asset Management Ltd which then gave them advice on a number of investments.

    They paid commission for this, but they were not told the money would be shared with the agents, the court was told.

    Their claims are being challenged, Mr Justice Morgan said.

    Plans to build almost 600 homes in Gateshead could be approved this week.

    Persimmon Homes wants to build the housing development on the former green belt land south of the Whickham Highway in Dunston Hill.

    The housing designs have been met with heavy objection from residents and local councillors, fearing an influx of "overbearing" homes that will change the character of the area.

    However, Gateshead Council planning officers are recommending that the developer's plans are given the go-ahead when they come before a planning committee hearing on Wednesday, subject to a section 106 agreement being signed.

    A North East group of so-called Paedophile hunters claim they've been in contact with a growing number of convicted sex offenders after they've been released from prison.

    Dark Justice claims the evidence it's gathered over the past four years has led to 164 arrests across the UK and 86 people being convicted for crimes against children.

    The National Police Chiefs Council says these groups "can undermine police investigations", but also says "the increase in these groups is symptomatic of the increasing scale of child sexual abuse that police are dealing with."

    Police are appealing for witnesses after eight army medals were among a number of sentimental and high value items taken in a burglary on a house in County Durham.

    The burglary was discovered at a property on South View Terrace, Tantobie on 9 November.

    Hundreds of children, who would normally get nothing or very little at Christmas will be waking up to presents thanks to a toy appeal by the Salvation Army on Teesside.

    Every year the charity helps Santa by putting out a request for unwrapped toys for children aged 0-16, to make life a little bit easier for families struggling at this time of year.

    If you would like to help, Kath Callan from the Salvation Army has said they'd really like items such as toys, toiletries and tinned goods.

    She added: "Everything is requested here so that we can give them out. We make sure every child gets something."

    A hospital trust in Newcastle is holding a special service to remember all those who've died or been attacked simply because they're transgender.

    Nearly 200 trans people were killed last year in hate crimes around the world, and the service today in the chapel at St Nicholas's Hospital in Gosforth, will remember them with prayers and readings.

    An East Cleveland primary school has been named the Parent Power State Primary School of the year.

    The Sunday Times named St. Bede's Catholic school, external in Markse for the award.

    That's not it though... they're risen twenty places and are now 4th in the paper's national league table .

  17. Durham police warn people to be vigilant when buying puppiespublished at 11:54 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2018

    Durham Constabulary is warning people to be careful if they're thinking of buying a puppy for Christmas.

    It comes after around 60 dogs were found in a raid carried out at a suspected puppy farm in Bishop Auckland yesterday.

    The dogs and puppies, of various breeds, have all been seen to by a vet amid concern for their welfare.

    Animal Welfare officers also rescued 26 stray and tethered horses in the town.

    The horses, which were illegally grazing on public land, were removed from Henson Close and a field to the rear of the Premier Inn.

    The horses will be safely and securely rehomed outside of the region following veterinary checks, unless claimed by the owner.

    Comedian Lost Voice Guy (also known as Lee Ridley from Consett) has appeared at the Royal Variety Performance.

    The 37-year-old, who has cerebral palsy and uses a computer to talk, performed for royalty after winning Britain's Got Talent.

    It was the first Royal Variety for the Duchess of Sussex who was congratulated on her recently announced pregnancy by comedian and Inbetweeners star Greg Davies.

    "As I believe they say in royal circles, one is thrilled when two become three," he said.
