Durham academic pardoned by UAEpublished at 08:16 Greenwich Mean Time 26 November 2018Breaking
Durham academic Matthew Hedges has been pardoned by the UAE government, an official has just said.
Hedges, 31, had always said he is innocent, and that he had been researching the country's security strategy.
Prosecutors said he admitted the charges in an Abu Dhabi court, which found him guilty of "spying for or on behalf of" the UK government and was jailed for life last week.
Today an official said he had been pardoned as part of the UAE's national day of clemency.
