Young people expect to be worse off than previous generations and believe opportunities depend on social background rather than talent, according to a survey from the Social Mobility Commission.

Gathered from 5,000 adults in the UK, it found 75% of people believe "large gaps" still remain between social classes - highest in the north-east of England.

The commission is being relaunched after the previous chair, former Darlington MP Alan Milburn, and commissioners walked out a year ago, protesting that there was no sign of any "meaningful action" from the government.

Furious residents cried "shame" as the Northumberland County Council group set up to review the next steps for Rothbury Community Hospital met for the first time today

Northumberland Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) voted last year to axe the hsopital and reshape the existing services around a health and wellbeing centre at the hospital.

Plans to close it were referred to an independent panel by then Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt.

The panel ruled that there had been flaws in the process and more work needed to be done and so the group has been formed.

Today's meeting at County Hall in Morpeth ended up being a very brief and largely administrative event.

Katie Scott, coordinator of the Save Rothbury Community Hospital campaign group (SRCH), described the meeting as "disgraceful'".

"It gives us no confidence whatsoever in the process," she said.

"The Secretary of State specifically said that local stakeholders, including Healthwatch - not just Healthwatch - should be included in the review."

At the start of the meeting, chairman Councillor Jeff Watson set out the role of the group, which is to examine the IRP's report, the health secretary's letter and report back.

It is not yet known when the review group will meet again.
