  2. Trees planted on former tip sitepublished at 09:32 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2019

Volunteers have planted dozens of trees as part of the regeneration of a former quarry and tip.

The team, working for Durham Wildlife Trust, planted 65 native trees at Thornley Wood, which is owned by Wolsingham Parish Council.

Since 2016 the Heart of Durham Project has been helping to transform the site to a place where the local community can visit to enjoy the wildlife and views.

Where once it was an impenetrable fir plantation, the site is gradually evolving with paths, hedges and an array of wildflowers emerging in the clearings in the summer months.

Many of these plants are flourishing because of the poor soil substrate, a legacy of the site’s other former use as a domestic tip.

  10. Business Secretary 'disappointed' at no new Nissan jobspublished at 17:55 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2019

Business Secretary Greg Clark addressed the Commons about Nissan, and government promises of financial aid if it built its X-Trail at Sunderland - something the Japanese company has scrapped.

He that while the decision will not lead to any job losses, the planned 741 new jobs will not now materialise.

"It's disappointing the extra jobs [at Sunderland] will no longer be available," he said.

Responding to a question from shadow business secretary Rebecca Long Bailey about promised financial aid to Nissan, Mr Clark said the Japanese company will have to resubmit any application for support.

He said aid is available for the whole motor industry if there is a good investment case.

Mr Clark did not disclose any figures, but it's thought Nissan would have to reapply for about £61m now that the company has decided not to build its X-Trail in the UK.

      BBC Business News

It's looking like Nissan will have to reapply for about £61m in UK government support after deciding not to build its X-Trail model in the UK.

The money was part of a package promised by Business Secretary Greg Clark in 2016 after Nissan warned about Brexit concerns.

Some of the aid package was linked directly to the X-Trail, while other elements were for other car-related investments.

Mr Clark is due to give an update to Parliament later today.

Earlier, today business minister Richard Harrington told the BBC that Nissan would get the £61m support payment.

But other sources have now told the BBC he jumped the gun.

Tony Hanson, assistant director for environment and neighbourhood services, said: “I’m sure the vast majority of residents will be shocked and appalled to see the footage of these near misses.

“Vehicles driving on pavements might just as easily hit a child as a crew member and we will take action to prosecute impatient motorists where appropriate.

“We do understand people lead busy lives, but collections only take a few moments and we would urge drivers not to put our crews and other road users in danger.”
