    The athletes in the Great North Run wheelchair race are on their way.

    David Weir is back after winning his seventh men's wheelchair title last year.

    Poland's Martyna Snopek will also seek to add a second successive title, although she could face a stiff challenge from British former champion Shelly Woods.

    10:10 Elite wheelchair race starts. Multiple Paralympic champion David Weir set a course record to win a seventh men's wheelchair title last year, and returns to the North East to defend his crown

    10:15 Elite women start. Kenyan Mary Keitany will look to win her fourth women's race since 2014.

    10:40 Start of the elite men and main Great North Run. Mo Farah is aiming to become the first athlete to win six successive Great North Run titles

    For those of you just waking up and wondering what the Great North Run is all about -

    The Great North Run is the biggest running event in the UK.

    About 57,000 runners have registered to be at the start line in Newcastle, before they race over the Tyne Bridge, through Gateshead and finish in South Shields.

    Many of the runners wear fancy dress and raise money for charity.

    There will also be live music and huge crowds along the route. You can read more about the memorable moments here.

  9. Welcome to our live coverage of the Great North Run 2019published at 09:00 British Summer Time 8 September 2019

    Good morning and welcome to our live coverage of the 2019 Great North Run.

    We'll be bringing you updates as thousands of runners take on the 13.1-mile course from Newcastle to South Shields.

    What a day it's looking like for it - the weather is beautiful in Newcastle this morning. Here is what the start line looked like a few hours ago, taken by BBC reporter Alison Freeman who was out and about bright and early.
