Northumbrian Water has said it's hoping supplies will be back to normal to homes in the Middlesbrough area by midday.
Engineers are working to repair a burst water main on Ladgate Lane, which happened at 07:30 between Overdale Road and Alan Peacock Way.
Supplies to homes in the TS3, TS4, TS5, TS6, TS7 and TS8 postcode areas have been affected - with some reporting low pressure and others having no water at all.
Ladgate Lane has been closed to traffic, and BBC Tees reporter Matty Nixon said: "Traffic is being re-routed through Park End, so traffic is building in the North Ormesby and Berwick Hills areas as a result."
Six schools have also been closed.
They are: Acklam Whin Primary, Easterside, Holmwood School, Marton Manor, St. Clare's and St. Thomas More.
Relive all the action as Derby's defeat at Swansea, together with a win for Wycombe and draws for Rotherham and Sheffield Wednesday, takes the Championship relegation battle to the final day.
