Anna Heslop, 25, who joined the crew aged 17 after seeing a person in trouble in the sea at Whitley Bay, passed out as a helm on the station's Atlantic 85 class lifeboat this week.
In her new role she will be responsible for taking command of the search and rescue vessel on call-outs, alongside her work training and assessing crew members.
Operations Manager Frank Taylor said: "It is a tremendous achievement for Anna to pass her helm training plan and to do so, as she has, with flying colours."
