Football-mad pupils at a Hartlepool primary school will be allowed to come into school later on Monday so they can watch the Euro 2020 final on Sunday night.

Rossemere Primary School says while the school will open at 08:40 as usual it will allow pupils to arrive up to 10:30.

It says it would rather children stayed in bed a bit longer and be rested after watching England take on Italy in the final on Sunday at 20:00.

Headteacher Caroline Reed said: "We always focus on parents and we've left Monday's start time flexible.

"The school will open as normal and breakfast club is still available for parents who work, but for those parents taking time off to watch the game and for youngsters who want to watch it too, we've got a later start time.

"It’s 55 years since England reached a major football final so let them watch, talk about the importance of the National Anthem, talk about pride and resilience and possibly disappointment. This is a learning opportunity."

Former Darlington keeper David Preece, (pictured below) who is now a goalkeeping coach, said: "Kasper was there six years after I left, and it provided a good grounding for him to work his way up to the next level."

And on the subject of Pickford's performance last night, Preece said he hoped the keeper would keep a calm head in the Euro final on Sunday.

"Whenever he has made mistakes and he hasn't let England down, just small errors, but he doesn't let them affect him, he's showing a real maturity," he said.

He said he was certain Pickford would collect the golden glove for his performance during the tournament.
