Graeme MacDonald, 36, said he "could've been killed" when the 12in (30cm) bar was thrown at the windscreen of his vehicle which had been called out in Walker two years ago.
There have been 50 attacks on firefighters on Tyneside and Wearside so far in 2021.
Watch manager Mr MacDonald said: "Anti-social behaviour creates significant implications and what those individuals are doing has a real effect on people’s professional and family lives.
“The incident I was involved in has stayed with me, and I wouldn't want any other crews... to experience the same ordeal.”
Tyne and Wear Fire Service say the period around bonfire night is one of the busiest for them and anti-social behaviour and attacks on firefighters are rife.
Deputy Chief Fire Officer Peter Heath said: "These acts of violence against our crews won’t be tolerated and the individuals responsible for these actions will be brought to justice with help from our partners."

A man has been rescued from the roof of his car on the Holy Island causeway in Northumberland.
Seahouses RNLI lifeboat was called out and found the man "panicking" standing on the roof of his vehicle, which was starting to float on the rising tide.
The coastguard rescue team from Holy Island waded out to the man in rough conditions.
The RNLI said the man had tried to cross the causeway after the displayed safe crossing times.
