A Conservative MP has said if the claims that Downing Street staff held a party during last December's coronavirus lockdown are true then it is "clearly unacceptable".

Redcar MP Jacob Young said: "It's right that the prime minister has now launched an investigation to establish the facts and has stated that disciplinary action will follow for any of those who broke the rules.

"The revelations that staff in Downing Street held a party, if true, are clearly unacceptable.

"The law applies to everybody and I completely understand the anger felt by many.

"I know from my own experience how hard last year was not seeing loved ones in their dying breath.

"We must never be in that position again."

North West Durham MP Richard Holden wants "clarification" from Boris Johnson and Number 10 over the alleged Christmas party held there in breach of coronavirus lockdown rules last year.

Speaking on the BBC's Politics Live, the Conservative MP said he had "no knowledge of specific events" but what had been alleged was "quite unacceptable".

He said he and his constituents followed the rules and deserved "extra clarification on what exactly took place and when".

Mr Holden also said a video showing Number 10 staff joking about a party at Downing Street in December last year was "incredibly uncomfortable" viewing.

"I don't know exactly what happened. It's quite clear from that video there are questions to be answered," he said.

"It's incredibly important people stick to guidelines and regulations. I've been sticking to them throughout in the interest for the broader public health messaging we need.

"We have been working hard with our constituents all the way through this. Some of our constituents have had an incredibly tough time, a lot of people lost their lives during this pandemic."
