Video caption: Storm Dudley leaves thousands of people without power overnight

Parts of the North East, Cumbria, North Yorkshire and Lancashire have been affected by damage.

  2. All 20,000 customers reconnected after Storm Dudley

All properties that lost power due to Storm Dudley have been reconnected, Northern Powergrid has confirmed.

More than 20,000 customers across north-east England were affected when the strong winds hit on Wednesday afternoon into Thursday, which led to an amber weather warning,

However, the firm has warned people to prepare for the onslaught of Storm Eunice, which is set to hit the North East of England on Friday.

The Met Office is warning of significant disruption and danger to life from Storm Eunice, with gusts of up to 80mph in exposed areas.

"Those high winds, combined with snowfall in some parts of the region do have the potential to cause some damage, so there is a relatively high likelihood that there will be some disruption to power supplies," Northern Powergrid said.

"Currently our best view is that we will start to see an impact in the late morning."

A train heads along the west coast between Whitehaven and Carlisle after Storm Dudley hit the north on Wednesday

It comes after a report said electricity firms' response to Storm Arwen, which left more than one million homes without power in November, was "unacceptable" at times.

An interim report by the Department for Business said waiting times to contact operators were too high and criticised the length of power cuts.

And although compensation of £24.5m had been paid, it had taken too long.
