The three-vehicle collision happened at about 06:30 on the A193 Byker Bypass.
Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue said two fire engines were on the scene within three minutes.
The three people received first aid at the scene and one man was taken to the RVI with serious injuries.
The road was closed and traffic was diverted via Shields Road.
