1. Long Covid rehab scheme up for national awardpublished at 11:44 British Summer Time 11 April 2022

A 12-week rehabilitation programme for people suffering from prolonged after-effects of Covid-19 has been shortlisted for a national local government award.

The Re:Start course in Middlesbrough has helped more than 100 people with long Covid since it launched early last year.

Mark, who did not want to give is full name, had coronavirus in July and was referred to the twice-weekly programme by his GP after his health deteriorated when he returned to work

He said: “The exercises are tailored for you to help open up your chest and aid your breathing.

“Last week I enjoyed a walk on the beach at Saltburn and was able to manage the steps all the way back to the top where we parked. It’s given me my stamina back!”

South Tees director of public health Mark Adams said: "We’re learning more and more about the issues caused by long Covid but it’s really reassuring that there is practical help out there that can make a difference."
