We have had a few partnerships which have had decent starts today, only to perish in the 40s.

But Dom Bess and George Hill have now put Yorkshire's first 50-run stand on the board and it's all gone a bit flat in the field for Durham, as it often does on afternoons here, when the ball is of a certain age. This one is 74 overs old.

The lights have been on since just before lunch and we have murky overhead conditions, but for now the umpires are happy to continue with the action.

Hill has 53 runs to his name. His half century came in 71 balls and included eight fours. Bess, who made 107 in his last match, now has 33.

  4. Bairstow not happy with change of ballpublished at 14:52 British Summer Time 18 April

    Durham v Yorkshire 137-4

New Yorkshire skipper Jonny Bairstow looked becalmed earlier. He'd faced 18 balls for just one run.

England fast bowler Matty Potts then complained to the umpires about the state of the ball and it was changed in the 44th over. Bairstow objected to the change but was ignored by the officials, so he decided to let his bat do the talking.

He hit Potts for four fours in five balls and followed that up with another at the start of his next over. During that period of play James Wharton also reached his first 50 of the season.

But Bairstow's innings wasn't to last. He soon fell lbw to Ben Raine for 22.

    Durham v Yorkshire 53-2

    Martin Emmerson

Durham put Yorkshire in on a green top but didn't really use the conditions to the best of their advantage and Yorkshire enjoyed a trouble-free first hour.

But then came a wicket out of nowhere as Adam Lyth clipped a simple chance to Graham Clark on 28. He was fielding at square leg and couldn't believe his luck.

Lyth couldn't believe he played that shot but moments later his fellow opener Finlay Bean also fell to the bowling of Brendan Doggett, as he took 2-1 in the space of four deliveries.

Yorkshire, having looked comfortable on 43-0, were suddenly 44-2.

  8. Durham without Bedinghampublished at 10:52 British Summer Time 18 April

    Durham v Yorkshire (11:00 BST)

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

Durham have lost the services of batsman David Bedingham and bowler Daniel Hogg.

Bedingham, who was the leading run-scorer in division one last season, broke a toe in the last game against Warwickshire. Hogg suffered an ankle issue in the same match. So Graham Clark returns to the batting ranks and Paul Coughlin is back to beef up the bowling.

Durham have lost two out of two so far. Back in 2019 they lost their first four, so let's hope thay can avoid that this season.

Yorkshire give a debut to New Zealand fast bowler Ben Sears. He recently played in a one day series against Pakistan. He hasn't played in England before. Matthew Revis also returns from a stress fracture.

It's a mild morning in the north east and the wind has dropped too. Durham have won the toss and will bowl.
