  6. Ripon sinkhole: What we know nowpublished at 08:35 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2016

    Sinkhole

With investigators due back in Magdalen's Road in Ripon this morning to further examine the site of a big sinkhole which has appeared there, this is what we know so far:

    • Emergency crews were called to the scene of the sinkhole at about 22:30 on Wednesday night after the hole appeared, consuming two gardens
    • Seven homes were originally evacuated, with people in a further six homes asked to leave later on Thursday due to a collapsed drain
    • Ripon is a well-known hotspot for sinkholes because of several underground deposits of gypsum, a highly soluble rock, which are slowly dissolving
    • In February 2014, another sinkhole appeared just round the corner at Magdalen's Close which led to the demolition of one property
    • Experts from the British Geological Society are due to visit the site of the sinkhole later today in a bid to find out more about what's happened

    BBC Travel

There are a few pinch-points on the roads in North Yorkshire at the moment to be aware of:

    • As we've been hearing, Magdalen's Road in Ripon is closed in both directions between the A6108 North Road junction and the Stonebridgegate junction due to the sinkhole
    • Traffic's currently building up on the A19 Fulford Road inbound in Fulford, York, around the Broadway junction
    • And it's also getting busy on the A1036 Foss Islands Road in both directions in York at the Layerthorpe Bridge junction
  9. Ripon sinkhole: More homes evacuatedpublished at 07:47 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2016

    Andrew Barton
    BBC Local Live, York

Engineers are due in Ripon once again later to find out what caused a sinkhole to appear on Magdalen's Road on Wednesday night, leading to the evacuation of seven properties.

Yesterday afternoon a sewer collapsed due to the sinkhole, leading to a further five homes being evacuated.

    Sinkhole

Fire crews were called out to properties on the road at about 22:30 Wednesday night.

Station Manager Ben Cairns, from North Yorkshire Fire service, told us yesterday: "It's not the first time sinkholes have been encountered in the area".

A house on Magdalen's Close had to be demolished in February 2014 after it was damaged when a 25ft sinkhole opened.

  12. Traffic and Travel: Roads and rail off to a good startpublished at 07:08 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2016

    BBC Travel

If you're about to leave the house and head out this morning, you shouldn't find any significant delays to disrupt you on the roads.

However, if you're in the Ripon area, Magdalen's Road is closed in both directions between the A6108 North Road junction and the Stonebridgegate junction, because of emergency repairs.

A 50ft-wide sinkhole appeared in the road on Wednesday evening.
